I just got back from an awesome pig hunting trip on the Chamberlain Ranch near Santa Ynez. I have been hunting pigs for over ten years and this was by far my most enjoyable trip. Friends have been recomending this place for about three years and now I know why.
Myself and two friends motored up from San Diego Friday morning and met Rod Jacobsen about two in the afternoon. He has the hunting rights to the 11,000 acre working ranch that is right next to Michael Jacksons Neverland Ranch and the Firestone brewery and winery. We unpacked our gear shot the breeze for about and hour and then went hunting. Only myself and my friend John were hunting our other buddy Scott came along to observe and see what pig hunting was all about. Rod has the most comfortable truck I have ever hunted out of. We rode around in the back on a padded seat that was more cushy than my sofa at home. Rod asked what we were looking for as far as trophy pigs or eatin pigs. He has both on the property. The first evening I missed a short shot on a real nice meat sow and my friend John missed from about 200 yards on a trophy class boar. We also passed up many other pigs that were not what we were looking for.
After hunting we went back to the camp Rod has set up. He has a bunk house, shower, working toilet and a beautiful bar and barbecue area. Rod cooked tri tip, venison loins and beans with elk meat, baked potatoes and a great salad. He cooked everything over oak and it was truly a great dining experience. My friends and I were amazed at the quality and quantity of the food provided. We joked with Rod that he really is wasting his talents and should open up a restaurant.
The next morning my friend John shot a nice boar and I took a nice meat sow. We went in to town for lunch and cruised around the ranch some more before I took one more meat pig to finish up the hunt. That night Rod cooked up another great meal and we said our goodbyes and headed back to reality.
The thing that made this whole experience great was Rod. He was genuinely concerned about all of us having a good time and getting what we came for.
After hanging out with him for an hour i felt like he was my buddy and not some guy I was paying to take me hunting. He is extremely knowledgeable about the ranch and the movement of the pigs. I have hunted with a lot of outfitters and this guy impressed me with everything he did. I will be going back for another hunt in April and I cannot wait.

Duke,

First of all, welcome to JHO! Glad to have you aboard.

Second, tell us more about the Chamberlain ranch. It sounds like a real first-class operation.

What was the cost for your two meat-pigs? Is there an additional charge for trophy boar? Was board included with the hunt, or is that an optional extra?

Enquiring minds wanna know!

Ditto Speckmisser. I've had a real urge to hunt pigs lately and it sounds like you found a good operation. Congratulations on your success!

The Chamberlain ranch is a beautiful place with rolling hills, pastures, valleys and water. Rod does everything, and the ranch gets very little hunting pressure. He skinned and gutted our pigs and he has a walk in cooler to keep the pigs cold. There are no trophy fees and there are plenty of pigs to choose from. He charges $550 for a fully guided two day hunt and he even fed us. The guy is very good at what he does and he is fun to hunt with. I felt like I was just hanging out with a buddy going hunting. I have hunted with three different outfitters for pigs and ths guy tops the list. My buddy John has hunted the same places with me over the last ten years and he agrees Rod runs a first class operation. He doesn't advertise and the ranch only gets hunted about once every 5-6 weeks. He can be reached at 805-689-6507.

I got a feeling that is about to change. Sounds like a great operation for a great price.

I hope Rod gets some more hunters up there. He is not the type of guy that is into advertising or tooting his own horn. Regards, Scott.

Duke,

Please don't bump threads. If there's genuine interest, they'll move up on their own. If not, they'll drop. Thanks.

that sounds ike a first class operation. I have always wanted to shoot a really big boar, but never had the chance. I think I will be giving your friend a call to set up a hunt in march some time.

I have a feeling that he will be getting to meet a lot of people from JHP.
