I just got back from an awesome pig hunting trip on the Chamberlain Ranch near Santa Ynez. I have been hunting pigs for over ten years and this was by far my most enjoyable trip. Friends have been recomending this place for about three years and now I know why.
Myself and two friends motored up from San Diego Friday morning and met Rod Jacobsen about two in the afternoon. He has the hunting rights to the 11,000 acre working ranch that is right next to Michael Jacksons Neverland Ranch and the Firestone brewery and winery. We unpacked our gear shot the breeze for about and hour and then went hunting. Only myself and my friend John were hunting our other buddy Scott came along to observe and see what pig hunting was all about. Rod has the most comfortable truck I have ever hunted out of. We rode around in the back on a padded seat that was more cushy than my sofa at home. Rod asked what we were looking for as far as trophy pigs or eatin pigs. He has both on the property. The first evening I missed a short shot on a real nice meat sow and my friend John missed from about 200 yards on a trophy class boar. We also passed up many other pigs that were not what we were looking for.
After hunting we went back to the camp Rod has set up. He has a bunk house, shower, working toilet and a beautiful bar and barbecue area. Rod cooked tri tip, venison loins and beans with elk meat, baked potatoes and a great salad. He cooked everything over oak and it was truly a great dining experience. My friends and I were amazed at the quality and quantity of the food provided. We joked with Rod that he really is wasting his talents and should open up a restaurant.
The next morning my friend John shot a nice boar and I took a nice meat sow. We went in to town for lunch and cruised around the ranch some more before I took one more meat pig to finish up the hunt. That night Rod cooked up another great meal and we said our goodbyes and headed back to reality.
The thing that made this whole experience great was Rod. He was genuinely concerned about all of us having a good time and getting what we came for.
After hanging out with him for an hour i felt like he was my buddy and not some guy I was paying to take me hunting. He is extremely knowledgeable about the ranch and the movement of the pigs. I have hunted with a lot of outfitters and this guy impressed me with everything he did. I will be going back for another hunt in April and I cannot wait.
