The only person I know that has seen hogs there is a close friend of mine. He saw them as he was all packed up and leaving, so no shots were fired.

The BLM website lists wild and feral hogs. Since your friend saw them there I guess I should take a peak. Beautiful place just to drive through.

I used to see them all the time on the private property next to the BLM. The last few times I went, I didn't see any so I haven't been in awhile. I need to go back though, since they've open up part of Doc's place to hunt. I also always get a shot or two at coyotes and once in a while see a rattler. It's a great place to go just to see the antilope and elk. There are a couple of nice water holes out there. Let me know if you go.

It will probably be a bit, but I will let you know. I need something to fill the gap between deer seasons.

I was out there for the Quail opener and I talked to a guy who bumped a sow on the west side of the foothills. He said he was bird huntin and came over a ridge and the sow was bedded down next to a tree. All he had was 7 1/2 shot, so he just watched her. We hiked ALL DARN day and I didnt see one hog track. It was VERY dry out there and I didnt see any water where we went..

The subject of hogs in the Carrizo Plain comes up almost regularly...
Yes, you MIGHT run into a hog, then again you might not. The majority of the wild pigs are on private property and it's just luck if you see any on the public land. What you will see is lots of new hunters, as the word has spread about sightings of "possible pigs". On any weekend you can expect to have plenty of company whether you are pig, varmint or bird hunting... This area USED to have loads of game, but as the crowds from "LA" started to arrive, the numbers of legal game on the Carrizo Plain plummeted.
My suggestion is save your money, go on a guided hunt, experience hunting that is not crowded, with at least a chance to see something.
Just my two cents,
A long time local...

I used to go out on a weekly basis out to carrizo. I have only seen one hog, and that was on private property. Good Luck.

I know of a few hogs that have been killed at the Carrizo Plains. Like others have said it is pretty hit and miss from what I have seen. You need to be in the right place at the right time to catch one on public land.

I have also noticed the increased number of hunters finding there way out to the Plains. As a private landowner out there I have also noticed a corresponding increase in the number of trespassers/poachers. Seems like these newcomers either have no respect for private land or don't know where they are half the time. I wish they would learn how to read a map!

I haven't gone for awhile, so I went Saturday. I usually see some at least on private. Didn't see a pig nor a track. This was the first time that we didn't even see a coyote. It's definately overhunted.
