I've been a member of the club for the last 9 years and the club can be good or bad depending on what you want to do with the club. Big game hunting is not as good anymore. Waterfowl hunting is unbeatable. Fishing and camping for the family is alot safer than public lands. The worst thing now is getting reservation to your preferred choice of property especially on the weekends. My advise is don't join because you won't get to utilize the club properties as much as you think you could unless you're retired and have all the time in the world to go anytime you want.

Fishing and camping for the family is alot safer than public lands.[/b]

I'm just curious about this, I see it in all the WU threads.

Safer from what? There are plenty of robberies, murders, assaults etc on public and private land. I know WU has patrolman but so does BLM and USFS. You also have wardens and regular cops out in some places.

Safer from illegal trespassers? We run several sneak hunters off our farms every year. Thinking private land is safer from other lands is foolish and can get you shot if you think you are all by yourself say in turkey season. Trespassers know no boundaries.

Safer roads or conditions? I guess that depends on the area or location. Most BLM and USFS roads I travel are maintained fairly well. Almost too well, allowing even 2 wheel drive vehicles into many places.

Maybe I'm missing something here, I'm guessing this is part of the sales pitch but it just doesn't make any sense to me. Can anyone explain this better that belongs to WU?

Jesse,
I understand your point. I've been a member for about 5 years, inactive now. I think what they are saying is all you mentioned. Safer from people stealing you equipment because they know exactly who's on the properties at any given time. If something comes up missing, they will narrow it down a little better by only having a few people to suspect rather than the whole public, they claim they have never had a theft. Safer because of the patrolman, you check in and check out after your done with your entire hunt. Alot of the places I hunted, if your weren't back before about 10:00pm, the patrolman went looking for you. If you don't check out on your last day than he'll go looking for you as well. Road conditions, well if it rains you walk, unless it's just a slight rain. If the road conditions are too wet, it's foot hunting only. Safer because there are no YAHOOS shooting/target practicing in camp, it's not allowed. Camp sites are cleaner. They do have tresspassers on occasion. This may not answer all you questions but maybe some. I haven't hunted it in a couple of years so I don't know how hard it is now to get on any properties, I guess I'll find out next year. Although I use to work for them as a salesman, I don't anymore. I truly liked being able to take my kids to a place like this, even though it wasn't very ofthen, it was still nice. I've had fairly good success with WU during the times I was using the club but I know the success on the club varies. Just my

Jesse,
What I mean by safer than public land is that you don't have this:
http://www.jesseshunting.com/forums/index....showtopic=50536

At least it did not happened to me for the last 9 years with WU. I used to hunt the Ventana Wilderness and fish at San Luis Reservoir and some local lakes in Santa Clara County. Several occassions where I returned to find my truck got vandalized like tires got stabbed, windshields broken, stereo stolen, or just big dents on the side with big rocks. If you visit some of the parking area along the shore of San Luis Reservoir, Anderson Reservoir, Calero Reservoir, Uvas, and Chesbro reservoir you will see shattered car glasses on the ground. And I'm sure you also heard about the rapist and killer in Yosemite a few years ago. I also had an incident back in 1986 where I was camping with my high school friends in the national forest around Mariposa. We were cooking our breakfast in camp and a group of dirt bikers just circled our campfire with their dirt bikes scooping up dirts all over us and our pan full of eggs and sausages. Before we could react they were gone. We had only casted a couple of stones at them. We were so pissed we wished we had our guns with us just like we were hunting. As far as I know all the things mentioned above has not happened on WU properties. I'm not trying to pitch a sale here because I do not work for WU. But I do find that this is one true phrase coming out of the mouth of WU salesmen. I'm sure other WU members experienced the same thing as it is why you saw it on every post about WU.

I've been a WU member for about 5 years. When I first joined it was fairly easy to get a reservation on weekends. No longer. In the last 2-3 years most of the weekends have been booked solid, especially on the more productive ranches, like Hill Ranch. The year before this ranch was really hot for pigs, but I never could get a reservation. It soured me on the club real fast. My work situation also deteriorated to the point it was hard to beg for a weekday off, so that strategy didn't work out. Also many ranches are open only on weekends, with maybe a Fri. or Mon. added, so it's not like you can hunt all week even if you have the time.
There are many ranches I never go to visit, just because I'm a working stiff and can't take off weekdays. Were I a retired person it might have worked out better. It's just hard to drive all night to a ranch, stay to hunt a day and a half, and have to drive back home again. I did that for a while but my energy ran out.
The really sad part is WU lost the lease on two of the best ranches, Twin Peaks and Ashhurst. Without these two ranches it's almost like a death in the family. I just can't get enthused anymore. If WU is listening, and has the power to get those ranches back, I would re-activate my membership in a hearbeat.
As for safety, I have never had a problem with my car vandalized or broken into. I feel safer with my family and friends on those ranches. Yes, you cannot get away from yayhoos or murderes who sneak on the property, but like someone said, since you have to check in and check out, it just makes it harder for criminals to do their thing. However, when I go fishing at my favorite ranch in Calaveras county I never forget to pack a handgun with me. Better to be safe than end up like those Yosemite tourists who ran into Cary Stayner.
To conclude, if you have a Mon-Fri job and only 2 weeks vacation a year, of which you have to use half of it to take the kids to Disneyland, then WU is not for you.
If you're retired with tons of time on your hands, then join. Park your RV or camper for a week at a time on a ranch and enjoy the premises. On any new ranch it takes several trips to get the feel for it and to settle in. Those short weekend trips actually wear you out more.

THanks for the replies Mel and Live2,

I know what mean about the yahoos coming in and camping next to you on public land. I can see the advantage there.

Bryce,

For the past three years or so getting a first choice weekday reservation two to three weeks in advance had not been possible for me. But if I ever get any reservation it's either I get a one day at one property and another day at a different property. Or it means that during my reservation the weather poured cats and dogs like crazy and everyone else cancelled their reservation. During last year's deer season I could not get any reservation to the property I wanted to go. Even the weekdays were booked solid. So this year I'm inactive.

By the way did the salesman take your application and check?
