Winter project is underway

This winter’s project will be a .45 caliber full stock flintlock. I have a 7/8”x42” Rice barrel, Jim Chambers Silar flintlock, Davis triggers and all iron mounted furniture. Hopefully I can have it done by Easter. Pics to follow as I make some headway.

I’ve made some progress in the last few weeks. The barrel is inlaid and pinned, the ramrod hole is drilled, the buttplate and toeplate is inlaid, the ramrod pipes and entry pipe is inlaid and the stock has been ban sawed to shape. Next up is the lock and triggers. That should cover about 2 weeks if I don’t have too many interruptions.

The lock and triggers are inlaid. It took a little longer than I anticipated. Now to spend some quality time with a variety of files to remove all of the wood that doesn’t look like a rifle. 41 days until my self imposed deadline.

Life kinda got in the way, but I’ve gotten it to the point of a little more shaping and a lot of sanding. Soon it will be disassembled, metal prepped for browning and wood stained.

Surprisingly I met my goal of finishing the rifle by Easter. I think I spent the last few weeks correcting errors. Something happened to the wood during the sanding process that I still haven’t figured out. I wet the stock between sanding, using finer grit sandpaper each time then finish with 0000 steel wool. After I finished with sandpaper I wet the stock as per usual and when the wood dried there was a bunch of gray splotches imbedded into the stock. Additional sanding wouldn’t remove it. I then tried baking soda, but since it’s a caustic and I use chromic acid for stain, I didn’t like the thought of a reaction. I then tried a 50/50 mix of bleach and water. Lesson learned. That may have been worse. More sanding. Finally I applied the chromic acid and let it burn for a dark finish. More steel wool helped to soften the dark spots, but it still bothers me that the final result isn’t what I expected. Oh well, maybe the next one will work out better.
