I was sound asleep at 8:30am and my cell phone rings. Normally if someone calls me this early on my day off I wouldnt be a happy camper. Since, it was someone asking if I wanted to come up and hunt pigs, I changed my tune. I got another invite to head up. Jim told me that the hogs did a number on his property last night and he wants these things out. He says he thinks its around 3 or 4 hogs, probabaly the same ones we saw Wednesday. I rolled over mumbled to the wife, she gave me the thumbs up and I jumped out of bed. I have to come back late tonight as I have a few things I have to do Sunday morning. Off to turners to buy a few pig tags and some slugs. Taking the shotgun this time and the digital camera. Wish me luck!!!
Now your bordering on rubbing your good fortune in.
I'm just very, very jealous.
Hope you bag one.
Seriously, if you want someone to carpool w/ let me know.
Well.....I got back late last night. That was one of the longest days I can remember in a long time. To make a long story short, no hogs were taken. Remind me to NEVER, EVEEEEEER take someone else's gun hunting that I have Never shot before. Hogs were there, but I didnt connect....
ROOKIE MISTAKE that I hate to admit I myself have made. Mine was on a white tail hunt in Alabama. Due to the difficulty associated with the transport of a firearm at the time I borrowed a 06 from one of the locals. Had no idea he kept it stored in his laundry room leaning up against the dryier were his boys could knock it over and inturn out of wack without telling their dad. I learned the hard way going home without and having some local boys laugh in my face about how Cali. boys don't know how to shoot.
The call came later when I was home with appologize saying he had missed a perfect shot at close range bye way too much. One of his boys after interogations admitted to knocking the rifle down. Little too late and stuck with me untill this day. Never use someone elses gun without at least throwing acouple of rounds through it.
P.S., I got the pic of the empty ice chest Bri and I was sorry to see it. There will be more chances later.
I remember you telling me that story when we were heading out to hunt bear last season. I'm sure you were glad to find out the "true" reason behind it. I took my 44 mag last wednesday, but I wanted something that had a little more range and was quicker on the follow up shots. My rifle is really not ideal for his property. Just to much IMO and I would be worried where my shot would end up If I missed. I thought to myself a 12 ga would be perfect. The only shotgun I own is my Browning Citori 12 ga Over/Under and I'm NOT runnin slugs through it. My buddy has a new Benelli Super Blackhawk and he shoots slugs through it all the time. I called him up and asked him if I could borrow it. He said no problem. Drove over gave him some pig sausage from Wednesdays pig and he gave me his gun. I had some old winchester slugs in the garage (must of been 15 years old) that I was gonna use.
I got up to King City at 3:30pm and sat around till 5 ish. Walked around his property and he was showing me all teh access points they use to enter his ranch. Got set up for the evening ambush at the same location. We waited and waited. Since he dosnet hunt I am the only one armed and he asked me how many pig tags I had. I replyed "3" with a smile. As were sitting there BSing, Here comes a hog down a ridgeline and down a trail headed for his property. The pig stops and looks around and IMO plays look out. 5 other hogs crest the ridgeline and boogie over to where the boar was standing. They are all together and walking slowly towards the shed. I'm thinking to myself "I have 3 pig tags, I'm gonna take the first 3". Jim ranged them at a little under 100 yards. I wanted them under 30 yards. They were coming in but VERY SLOW...I hear him wisper 77 yards, 65 yards and then they stop and feed on the grass. I'm thinking come on you little suckers
After they feed for what seems like forever, they start making there way back towards me. They walk probably another 5 yards and stop and feed on the grass again. I'm like
. I think to myself these things are approximately 60 yards out and I have a Benelli Super Blackhawk I'll hit them know problem. Well, my ego took over and what I should of done is be patient. I beaded the 12 ga at the biggest one which was a nice size boar and his head was down and he didnt know we were there. I squeezed the trigger and it was the LONGEST trigger pull I have EVER seen finally KA-BOOOOOMMMMMM right over his back
. "Did I jerk the shot, WTF...The hogs start to scramble and I put the bead on another on and pull the trigger and no "KA-Boom". I look down and the first round didnt fully eject. After I get the round clear the hogs are making a full sprint for freedom
...I was so bummed, but thats huntin. I learned a very valuable lesson. Never use someone else gun unless you have shot it before and know it well. I'll get you yet you little King City pigs
