XMortician,
At the time in 2004 and in 2005 when our group hunted in Paul's place, we had access to the surrounding 2,500 acre ranch via a gate that was left unlocked for the hunters. We were brought to the feeder in the 2,500 acre ranch and hunted it at night. I really am just following on what Paul advertises regarding the other ranches. Thanks for your reply. God Bless.

Is that for real?
I got the same e-mail last week (no kidding)
The only requirement was a $50.00 down payment to reserve the spot which goes to gratuity afterwards.

Hello from the Ranch,

Thank you for entering our "free hog hunt" give-a-way. Since it is Christmas, we are giving a totally free hunt to a few randomly selected individuals that registered for this drawing. This means, you are the winner of a free hog hunt!!
Here is what you have won: A 3 day and 2 night hunt which will allow you to harvest 2 hogs, 2 bobcat, 2 coyotes, and unlimited varmints. This will also include your meals, lodging, and guide fees. The value of this hunt is $524. All you will be responsible to pay for is your state hunting license of $45, $35 per hog to the skinners to gut, skin, and quarter, and $50 gratuity to your staff. ( We will collect a $50 booking fee upon scheduling your hunt, and this will be reapplied to your gratuity, once at the ranch.) You can choose any available hunt date within the next 12 months!.

All you have to do to claim your free hunt, is call the ranch before December 31, 2006, and schedule your hunt date. You can come alone, or bring a few buddies, each paying the current rates for the time of year you choose to hunt. See our hunt page for details at: http://wildhoghunttexas.com/links.htm

If you are already scheduled at the ranch during this time, or have purchased a hunt to take at this time, this offer is not valid. You can take only 1 free hunt per calendar year, and only 1 person in your group can take a free hunt at the same time.

This offer is not valid for Texas residents. Texas residents, call for specific details about your free hog hunt!

You can visit our web site at www.WildHogHuntTexas.com as well as call the ranch at 832-419-6151 if you have any questions, or to make arrangements.

We hope you are able to take advantage of your free hog hunt, and we hope to see you soon at the ranch!

Sincerely,
Paul C.

I know another guy who supposedly won this hunt too. That makes 3. Kinda makes you wonder. You know the saying about sounding too good to be true. I'd be sure to give this due dilligence before spending the time and travel expense.

Good Question,
It sounds like one of the above posts has had a good experience with this outfit.
maybe send him a personal e-mail and see what more he has to say.
I've been so busy with my work that I haven'tt even been able to go on my annual long range fishing trip for 3 years now and I'm really pressed to find proper hunting and scouting time.
I have vowed that 2007 will be my workaholic year to pay down all dept so that I can start to live again.
So unless I have a somewhat local area I can't even hunt properly.
Texas is out of the question for me free or not.

As you can see it is a marketing tool. You give away a free hunt and the free hunter brings along a buddy(a paying hunter). The free hunter can also go alone but most folks will bring along a buddy(the paying hunter). So the free hunter gets 2 hogs(the hogs multiply and we see piglets with the sow in the very early morning hours and herds of small, young pigs), a free room(the cabin or lodge is already there whether there are hunters or not) and the food is free(figure on the groceries cost the ranch $20???/person/day). The buddy(paying hunter) pays $299 for 2 hogs, $75 for the cabin, $75 for the food for the whole 3day/2night hunt and $75 for the guide(for the whole 3day/2night hunt) for a total of $524 for the buddy(paying hunter). The ranch requires that all kill be gutted, skinned and quartered by the guide for a skinning fee of $35/hog. Plus gratuities ($50 minimum) for the guide/cook. So the free hunter is looking at a $120 fee($35/hog skinning/quartering fee, and $50 gratuities). While the buddy(paying hunter) is looking at $524 plus $35/hog skinning/quartering fee and $50 gartuities for a total of $644. Most definitely in my opinion(I have no connection with the ranch whatsoever at all) the ranch as a marketing tool can afford to give away that "free" hog hunt. I have hunted in that ranch in 2004 and my buddies went back in 2005. We got what we paid for and we were satisfied. I am definitely setting up that "free" hog hunt for February 2007. I love the Texas style 24 hour, bait 'em, shoot 'em, spotlight 'em, laser 'em, you name it(except the use of poison) style of hunting. I still love the Fort Hunter Liggett, Camp Roberts hill and dale hunting, but hey for $120(the cost of the ranch required $35/hog skinning/quartering fee per hog and the ranch required $50 gratuity) I can shoot 2 hogs day and night, 2 coyotes, 2 bobcats(I am not into bobcat hunting at all so I will skip that) and all the varmints I can shoot with my .22LR(pistol and rifle) I am certainly going for it. I also would like to check out the Edmund Tom Ranch that bighog posted. It is only 60 miles south of Paul's ranch and the Edmund Tom Ranch has Javelina which I would like to check out. There are a number of folks in here JHO that go to Texas for hog and varmint hunting. For me it is worth the gas and drive(24 hr. non-stop one way) or the airline(Southwest) ticket to pop these barrel chested Texas piggies day or night. You gotta love BBQ luscious delicious pork ribs in order to put up with all this out of state hog hunting. Take care and God Bless Texas.

Hi Larry,
My friends and I hunted the ETom ranch about 4 years ago. That is one nice ranch. The accommodations were supernice and Ed and JPat Tom, the owners were very hospitable. I highly recommend them.
One thing, though, their ranch is mostly for deer hunting, not really many hogs. We all got hogs, but I was shooting for 2 pigs, but only got one. Of course, the hog numbers might vary depending on the time of month and one's luck. One of my friends liked the ranch so much he went back for a doe cull hunt, very innexpensive.
I actually prefer to drive to Tx than fly. With airport security the way it is it takes forever to check in. Also with guns to check in it can delay you even more. Another thing is if the ranch doesn't turn on the freezer high enough or early enough your meat doesn't get thoroughly frozen. Driving you can pack your meat in coolers w/ lots of crushed ice and drain the cold water during stops and add more ice.
Let me know your dates and I'll see if I can join you.
My buddy Live2hunt and EMSflyer look like they're interested. Shoot me an e-mail

Michael

Hey Larry, as per my prev post I decided to put in for the free drawing above.... and i JUST WON!!! But my FREE HUNT dates are from May21 until Dec21 2007. I'm sure it's for real - You have to be right about the marketing scheme, also they probably push for an "exotic animal" - and their website is expensive for Axis deer in TX.

I won the same deal, 2hogs, 2yotes, 2cats + unlimited varmints. $50 booking fee to be paid by Dec31 2006, $50 is re-applied to the gratuities once up there, then have to pay the $35 skinning fee each hog, and $45 texas hunting license. Read the FAQ on the website, it says you need your own transportaition and you must bring your own bait - two bags of deercorn (cheap at walmart).

A couple more JHO'ers should put in for this and then we can all pick the same weekend for our "free hunt"

I can't do it too close to May - I'll be taking 4 days off for the Tejon HamSlam. Thinking more like August of next year...

Oneshothunter,
Sorry for the very loooooong delay in my reply. I hardly open up my MSN Hotmail 'cause of all the pop ups at MSN. Anyway I read your e-mail last Dec. 9 and this is what we did when we flew Southwest for $99 one way with 21 day advance purchase(this was back in 2002 going to my friend's Houston area ranch, now I think it is still offered but more like the price went up to $119 one way with 21 day advance purchase). We bought a really big golf bag(long straight rectangle shaped, WITHOUT a bottleneck shape) that was on sale at Big 5 for $29. We put our 2 rifles in one rifle case per gun. Then we put both rifle cases inside the BIG GOLF BAG and then the empty space in the golf bag we filled with our clothes and toiletries. Southwest allows 2 luggages per passenger. So we flew to Texas with only one luggage. When we came back with our piggy meat, we stuffed the frozen meat in one BIG BOX(airline approved for frozen meat). So coming to L.A. where we live we had 2 luggages as allowed by Southwest. So we had no excess luggage to declare and NO penalty to pay. All our luggage, guns and porky meat went back with us for FREE.
NOW the time when we drove to Texas we drove in a 4 door Toyota Tacoma 4x4 with a low camper shell. There were only 4 of us in the truck, so we were comfortable. We pulled a small(4' X 6') U-Haul trailer and we put all the coolers inside the trailer. We drove between 65-70MPH and the small V-6 engine was giving good economy.
L.A. to San Antonio, Texas is 1,500 miles ONE WAY. At 20 MPG the gallons consumed was 75 gallons of fuel for one way. Round trip it will be 150 gallons. Multiply that by $2.50 and the round trip fuel cost is $375. With a bigger truck with a V-8 engine the fuel consumption will be like 16-17 MPG at 65 MPH without pulling a trailer. The round trip fuel cost will be $468 at 65 MPH.
Regarding the hunt at Paul's place in 2004 and in 2005, we took 2 hogs per person because there were so many wild pigs inside the high fence area. The grass was hip high when we went in Oct. 2004. We could hear the big wild boars battling each other in the high grass and we could see the high grass swaying ang shaking from the battles and chasing but we could only see for fleeting moments the top part of the hog backs and their uplifted heads fighting and chasing. Paul at that time only had an 8 bunk bed/3 bedroom trailer home for the hunters to sleep in. I heard that Paul has added a lodge with several bedrooms for the hunters to sleep in. We dealt with Paul directly as Paul was the owner/manager. It was a satisfactory hunt as we were only charged what we had agreed upon in our telephone conversations and e-mails while we were setting up the hunt. I got 2 hundred pound hogs with my BAR .338 WM. We paid for the then at the time optional skinning($25 extra at the time) for our hogs as we were feeling too lazy to mess with the dead hogs. Just be careful you don't hit the exotics that also roam the ranch. The exotics are way too expensive. We arrived at 1 PM Friday afternoon and immediately upon unpacking we went hog hunting. I didn't harvest my 2 hogs until Saturday morning. At the time we were the only ones(5 of us, one guy took the Southwest flight) hunting the ranch due to we were the only ones that booked on those dates. When we were about to leave on Sunday at 11 AM, another group of 3 hunters came in with their ATV vehicle. If you have anymore questions, just post it or e-mail me at the e-mail address accessed thru JHO. God Bless Texas.

Hi all, I'm new here as you can see. I've been around for awhile, just thought I would finally register, and maybe help somebody, as I get so much info from all of you. I also won one of these hunts the other day, I didn't register for anything, but 5 of us guys went down there in June of this year. The 5 of us got 8 hogs. The same time there was 4 other hunters, and they got 6 hogs. They did build a new bunkhouse, it has like 4 rooms with 3 bunkbeds in each room, with central air. New bath house out behind with like 3 toilets, 4 sinks and 4 showers. The ranch is basically a few hundred acres high fence, "inside another ranch" of which you have to drive back out main gate, about 10 miles, through a guys yard to get to the backside of the fenced in area. That may be ok for deer, or predator calling, but your best bet for hogs is inside the high fence area. I don't think the chance for yotes or bobcats is real great. The exotics are pretty tame, the elk bedded down 15 yds from the bunkhouse at nights. The hogs however are not tame :) I ended up shooting 1 with bow, and 1 with a pistol, both during spot and stalk. We had a good time there, and would go back again. One thing that made it more enjoyable was that 2 of the guys left after a day and a half, and we stayed a day longer then anyone else. So we pretty much had free run of the place. So the only slightly negative things are, the size of the ranch, chances at yotes and cats, compared to other places in Texas. In '07 we are looking at maybe someplace in Oklahoma, to cut down on drive time and fuel, so if anybody knows of any good places let me know. Sorry so long for my first post, but hope it helps. If you have any other questions, let me know and I'll do my best to answer. Thanks
