If you have ever hunted Hogs or any thing else on the Work's ranch with Bert Claassen's guide service I'd like to hear how it went. I may book a hunt there next Spring or Fall.
My dad took my hunting there two Christmas vacations ago and had a great time. We drove from Long Beach to the ranch near Paso Robles on a Sunday and we were supposed to hunt Monday and Tuesday. As soon as we got there (around 4ish) he wanted to take us around and perhaps get a pig that evening. That evening we saw a lot of pigs, giving us (My Dad, neighbor, and myself) a good feeling about this place. Anyway, we all end up getting our pigs the first day of a two day hunt. We didn't have a scale, but my first boar was about 275-300#. My dad got a meat pig that went about 75# or so. My neighbor bagged a 150# boar. We saw a lot of pigs that first day, two I recall were noticably bigger than the one I harvested. Since we were done pig hunting on the first day, the second day we went dove and quail hunting. The dove were thick as flies and didn't have a problem getting a limit. For the quail, it was 3 around. As a note, no dogs were used during the entire hunt.
The meals were very good, well after climbing around the brush and hiking around, anything would have tasted good. We had chicken fried steak one night and steak the other. For lunch we went back to HQ and had tacos and I forget what we had the other day.
Bert is a great guy with lots of stories and a good sense of humor. He works extra hard to get you a pig and just works hard in general. I definately plan on going back as soon as I graduate and make a few $$$ of my own. This hunt definately got me hooked. You'll have a great time if you decide to go with the Work's Ranch, I sure did. (Not affiliated with the Work's Wildlife Ranch in any way, just a happy customer.)
Nothing beats first hand accounts like Waldo's here. Hog Hunter magazine offers guide evaluations submitted by hunters as well. In the 2002 Winter edition, they received several evals about Work Ranch. You can see them here.
Here's the website for the Work's Ranch. www.pig-hunt.com The only thing that I don't really care for is that there is a 3 person minimum to hunt the Work Ranch and a 2 person minimum for their ajoining property, the Jack Ranch. Oh well, find a buddy and enjoy the experience I guess. Good Luck
