How long can I expect to wait for 4 guys to getpoints enough to draw a tag? Not sure of the unit. I have a freind with a BIL who will let us hunt. Also, are we better off going on a archery hunt or Rifle hunt? Any links on Wyoming big game apppreciated.

Rifle or archery? depends on where you want to hunt, and how dedicated of a bow hunter you are.
I don't have a clue about a point system, but you could go to the wyo dfg sight, and it would tell you.

What areas are you looking at?

Wyoming does not have a point system for Deer or Elk at this time.

Word is that Wyo will be going to the point system next year.

If your buddy is in a GEN (general) elk unit, your odds of drawing a GEN elk with a regular priced tag is about 33% or 1 in 3 odds. If you're willing to pay around $800 for the expensive tag, your odds of drawing a GEN tag are about 70%.

Cow tags in most units are about 100% draw odds for the regular priced tags.

Wyo does sell "reduced price cow/calf" tags too--you can get one of these in addition to a full price cow tag in areas where the state is trying to reduce the herd numbers. They're $250. Some are hard to draw and some are easy to draw.

Deadline's January 31st, so you'd have to submit your ap quick.

Living here, I haven't heard about Wyoming going to a points system, for elk, deer or antelope. I know that trophy game is currently on a points system which is pretty broken. I'll spare you the rant on that one.

As for the original question, if you're applying as a group (party), you're chances are pretty good. If one of you draws, all of you draw. Some of the limited quota area have good success rates for non-residents, some have low success rates for non-res applicants. Use the Wyo game and fish web-site to look for both application and success rates for non-residetns, by zone. A handy tool.

If you're interested in the reduced price, cow/calf hunts, the "Elk Reduction Program" offered in Grand Teton National Park is always a sure bet. The GT park herd exceeds management objectives annually, and therefor the park works through the state to issue lots of cow/calf tags to res and non-res hunter alike. For the last 4 years, there have been so many tags that you can buy them over-the-counter. If you're looking to fill the freezer, it's a great hunt - especially if you time it right. This hunt also offers a great fallback option should the park zones turn out to be heavily pressured (always are) or passed the primary migration. The option is the National Elk Refuge, which will accept any general license (or park license) in their lottery system (done 3x a week) to hunt the north end of the refuge. MANY hunters fill their tags this way... but you gotta be present for the lottery drawing.

Anyway, sorry for the long post, but I thought it might help.

Yeah, this January's deadlines is for the 2005 season. And it's always a mid - late January deadline for that same years season, so if you're planning on a 2006 hunt, then you'll apply in January of 2006.

Will I need to apply now to guarantee a hunt in '06? Can I apply for a hunt now and not go if my party cannot go? If that is not right let me know. I'm still waiting to find out just where this will take place.
Thanks All!

WI,
If you want to go on an elk hunt in 2006 then you put in for elk in Jan. of 2006. That simple. If you do draw and your party cannot go there really isn't nothing you can do unless it is medical reasons. If its not medical there is NO refunds.
