Well waited 20 years to get this tag and to be honest it was the hardest hunting I have ever done when it comes to hiking up and down mountains. The amount of lava rock everywhere you step and for that matter drive on the roads was insane but with that said I wasn’t impressed with the quality of bucks I saw. We saw a lot of game lots of small bucks in the 14 to 19 inch category but no big ones like that zone carried years ago. Don’t get me wrong my partner and I had a great time we got up early every day and hit it hard we were up there from the opening day on and on the twelfth day I decided to go after this buck we seen earlier in the week and sure enough he was where we saw him not a smoker buck but a decent mule deer. I have always said the hunt is about the memories you make with family and friends and the deer is just a bonus. Hope everyone had a safe and successful season and GOD BLESS AMERICA

Great buck! I was up there hunting this season as well, and I agree, the quality did not live up to years past. Unfortunately my hunting partner had to cancel a week before the hunt and I completely changed my tactics since I didn’t want to kill myself on the hunt I had planned. I had the same experience as you, looked at small bucks for the first two days and on the third morning I was able to turn up a nice 4x4 with a double eye guard that I was able to stalk in to 60 yards on so I made my decision to put meat in the freezer. I absolutely loved the country and had a blast, but bummed with the way the zone seems to be going. I’ve been watching a couple Facebook pages and haven’t seen a single smoker buck come out of 5B this year.

Thank you! Very glad to hear you and your partner were able to get your bucks, I was down the road from the campground so I didn’t talk to many people, but from the few I did talk to, it sounded like most people were seeing exactly what we saw.
