So the old man whet his whistle big game hunting last year on an antelope hunt. He's even sporting a new Sako .270 now. I guess he's hooked. Thinking to myself, self, what's the next hunt to plan? I figured that we needed something not too strenuous since the old man doesn't get around that well, hopefully with a good chance of success, and a hunt not requiring bonus or preference points, all without breaking the bank. Now Dad is not a trophy hunter. I had to keep him from shooting doe antelope last year. He's old school. He just likes the hunt and horns mean nothing to him. When I call home after a successful trip he always asks how big. But he doesn't mean score or antler inches, he means literally, how big, as in how heavy? To him a good critter is just one that is big and fat and tasty. With all that said, a cow elk hunt sounded perfect. I called Garth Carter to get a recommendation and he turned us on to a Utah ranch with landowner tags. We just sent the deposit off today. My little bro is going too. I'm excited. This will be the first time we've ever had all three of us on a big game hunt. Now Fall can't come fast enough.

Way to go SD, nothing more memorable then a family affair.....i like your father's hunting ethics, kinda sounds like my grandfather...especially the "how big" part.

That's very cool, SD! Take advantage of those opportunities! I wish my dad could join my brother and me on some of our hunts!

That's way cool SD. I don't have family to hunt with like that.

And your dad sounds like me... the racks are in the cellar, but I have pictures of the great meals.

My family has been going on a cow hunt now for 7 years. We leave the hard-core hunts at home & go for the time together & meat. Bring a good camera, & enjoy being out in the field with family.

That's awesome. Good for you getting your Pa out there again. I'm sure you will see some 400" bulls since you won't have a bull tag. Take a good camera. Let me know when I can pick up my packaged backstraps.

We are going semi guided. Place to stay on the ranch but hunt on our own.

I'd like to do something with elk about like your talking. Cow elk because I'm mostly a meat hunter and also something that won't be killer tough. I have family in Colorado but everywhere they know to hunt is straight up and down with no good road access.

because that is where elk live, at least on public land. If you want easy, you better know somebody or be willing to open the wallet a little bit.

Me, I'm honestly a little torn on this hunt. There are two somewhat conflicting objectives at work here. I love hard, strenuous and fulfilling hunts, but this hunt isn't about me. Dad's idea of a good hunt is a relaxing time, a warm and soft place to sleep, good food, some good scenery and a chance to fill the freezer if we're lucky. I'm in the back seat on this one and it's about enjoying time with the grouchy old fart while we still can. I don't take a back seat well so I will constantly have to check myself to prioritize and keep from making this hunt more than it needs to be.

Yeah, don't be torn. You will have plenty of hard and strenuous hunts. This hunt is the time to kick back and make some memories. Enjoy !

Ditto what Shayman says, SD. My dad,s been gone 12 years and my uncle 3. You'll have years to climb into the great spots again, unless you think you might take to the chair huntin' too much

Enjoy it while you can.

You'll have a "strenous and fulfilling hunt" with your dad walking along side you as you bring out his(and your) elk. Best time I ever had,and will always remember, was listening to my dad complain and gripe as we packed out his cow. Enjoy it while there still here,as you will never find a better hunting partner. Remember. Pictures,Pictures, and more Pictures.
Good luck on your hunt.
