Yeah, I'm still on cloud nine guys....I hope to see you guys draw some good tags too~! (sooner than later hopefully)

Although, I'm already thinkin'...okay, gotta hit the hills real hard starting pronto....time to step up the archery practice and elk talkin' on my calls.

Part of the issue last year was that I was stuck at full draw for a couple minute which lead to a brash decision to lean behind a tree to take that shot.....I shoulda held longer....going to double or triple the time I can comfortably sit @ full draw too....

Very nice,I'm happy for ya. Bill Your Bugling is pretty good already, I'm think you need to work on those cow calls. Good Luck in filling that tag with a nice bull.

wmidbrook, you are a true optimist. I am a true pesimist. They announced the draw on 6/24 and your post is the 17th. I have since found out that that is the day they ran my credit card for my buddy and me in the Valle for the first rifle hunt. I found out when USO sent me a congrats letter looking to see if I wanted a guide. Guess it's something I wrote off the day I applied. I guess if you call your credit card company, that's the fastest way to find out. Good luck. I am too on cloud 9 and hardly can bring myself to drink a beer to shed a good 20#'s before I go.

Congrats to you on a super tag and good luck.

I drew my 3rd choice...not the VV hunt. Where I'll be hunting is relatively gentle terrain compared to places like the Wyoming Range, Sawtooth mountains, etc....nonetheless, I'm working on getting into better shape too to increase my odds of success although sitting on an active water hole or wallow all day can be a good way to go too.

You can look for credit card hits a week or two before the draw results are posted...no big secret there.

Do you know where you are going to hunt yet? If you go to Valle Vidal, let me know how you did and where you went. Good luck.

Thanks. I drew 16C (2nd archery season)--there are many better units but it's a decent unit. I don't know where in the Valle Vidal (VV) I'd go if I were to draw the tag.

You can't go wrong with a Valle Vidal tag. Just hold out for a bigger bull. I read a few posts about it where if you hike a few miles in, you'd have multiple shot opportunities if you've got some elk hunting skills. There will be guys on horses covering a bit more ground, but it still can be done on foot too. That is to say that quite a few guys hunt from the main camp and score 350+ bulls without horses....the horse hunters may have a better chance at getting into more bigger bulls further away from the more heavily hunted areas.

We hired a guide. Actually 2 one for each of us. We'll have horses and will probably hunt pretty high and far from the road. With a once in a lifetime tag and my hunting buddy with 8 more preference points in CO than me, we probably won't have an opportunity like this for a long time if ever. So we are going guided.

Sounds like a great hunt.. I think with those circumstances I'd definitely opt to take the guided route myself. Good luck. Hope you get a monster.
