I see a bunch of you guys that post up pics regularly are shooting ar's for pigs these days so lets see what you are shooting and what you would change. I just got my first lower reciever today and plan on getting that built asap the only thing holding me up is the choice between 300blackout and 6.8spc2

dont get the 300bo that round sucks as far as I can tell the ballistics are horrible at 400 yards you practically have to aim at the clouds to hit something. Check out 68forums.com a few of us are on there

I would say the 6.8 is the best place to start if your not sure what you want. The 6.8 , 300, and 6.5 will all get the job done and as you hunt more with the AR 15 platform you can start to change things for your style or enviroment. I have all three!

still digging into this an probably buying the upper today, I am assuming most of you guys are shooting the barnes tsx right? if so what grain? i figured 115 just so i could shoot the same weight hunting bullet as i would the cheaper umc target stuff but now im reading alot of people are only shooting the 85s for pigs but that seems light

forgive me as i am new still..:smiley_doh:... But how many shells do u take in a gun like that when hunting pig. I know its 3 in my shotgun for birds but i am not sure of the law for pig hunting. Right now we have a 30-30 and a 300savage. do i need to get rid of my old western style guns and than hunt with new AR style guns. Is there a reason to need that kind of gun while i hunt. thank you for the help

no you dont need to get rid of your old guns, this gun is more or less to replace a 16" barreled 3030 i had to sell. I am just looking for a light compact durable gun to have in the truck with me and take on short hikes doing ranch work instead of packing around a full length rifle all the time and it will be awesome for hunting in tighter cover also, besides that i hunt them with my bow 90% of the time anyways

yes...it is CA legal. 450 Bushmaster 16" upper on a "off list lower"(Spikes lower). Pic is with 5 round mag.

I would go with a 300 blackout. I'm building one now. Friend has one and killed a nice 4x3 buck dead at 50yds. Didn't even take a step. You can load up bullets from 110 - 220 grains. Can't do that with a 6.8.

btw, you can use the same mags from your 5.56, same bolt. Just swap the barrel out and you are good to go.

Oh and you can reload for them using existing 223 brass. I had a crap load of 223 brass and reloaded some for my bud.

Pretty simple. I've added a 223 round for comparison.

Im glad to see this hread bc Ive been thinking about a 6.8 upper for hunting lately. But here's my question - have u ever really taken advantage of the faster follow up shot ability of a semi-auto vs bolt action? Has anyone ever taken 2 or more hogs out of group? If not then I still lean towards my .308 bolt action for more knock down power on
my first and only shot.

Also, how does the lethality of 6.8 or 300 black compare to my 7.62x39?

If you go to the 68forums.com you will see people taking pigs with the 6.8spc all the time. There is at least one taken a week. Those who have the 300bo and 6.8spc rather hunt with the 6.8 because of better long range shots. The 300bo has a bigger bullet but less powder to get it out there. That's why ballistics suck. You can use most steal magazines for the 223 as the 6.8 you just need a slight mod to the feed lips. Also you can reload many different rounds in the 6.8 from 80gr to 140gr with many different powders. So you can make up your mind and get a 6.8 I would join the 68forums.com they have tons of reload data and other rifle data as well.

Here you go...my 6.8 at work on a big group under a feeder in Texas this past June. 85 gr. Barnes TSX. See the one with the tusks sticking out?...It's 335 lbs hogzilla on the hoof.
