Got an e-mail tonite from Scott (grtwythunter) from High Desert Skullworks about my big old ugly boars head that he's working on. Some of his quotes were:

"After the
bugs got it cleaned there was a surprise"

"Not a bullet. I'm sure it goes with the no ears story. The fact he was still
alive is a testament to the toughness of these hogs."

The first thing that I thought was a bullet in his skull, or maybe a broadhead, but when I was skinning out the head, I didnt notice anything irregular. Whats your guess as to what he's keeping his lips sealed about? The closest guess will win you admiration and respect of all the hog hunters on here!

Here's piggys head shot. Bring on the guesses!

Another quote,

"I won't spoil it, but I think
you'll be glad you got this guy Euro mounted."

By the sound of this, it sounds like it's going to be something pretty cool and unusual......

actually it kinda looks like the whole side of his heads been squashed and the skull was maybe broken ( gawd I love these guessing games)
AS- did you sit on the piggie when it was a newborn on accident? Or drop it in a pond?
<
how about piggie was hiding in a woodpile and got chain-sawed by accident
or maybe it had piggie brain cancer

I can't stand it I'm calling Scott.

Ok, no cheating ...I wont call Scott, (he'd just laugh at me anyway- he'd never let the cat out of the bag) but isn't that a huge soft- ball sized crater up high on his upper neck area, behind his "no- ear- having" head?

One thing that really sticks out about this guy is that his head really seemed narrow. Here's a pic that one of the Tejon Ranch guys had taken a while back and e-mailed to me. His head really looks narrow to me....you?

Geeze

Heck of a head wound, now he's missing the other ear.
And it's not a bullet through the ears? Or a broadhead?

This is good, I'll be thinking about it all day tomorrow-
Nice work Q2Dude on the guessing game. Love it.
It's got me stumped. For now.

Billrob- you are right- it does look like he's deaf in at least one ear...

My guess is that his ears got gnawed off by another animal. Be it dogs, coyotes, a lion or another pig.

Maybe there are some teeth stuck in his skull from his encounter? Or some other kind of battle wounds that have healed over.

Unique and tough animal though.

Im gonna go with CAjackrabbitWCP on mabe broken off teeth...or claws..or wouldnt it be cool if he had a broken off tusk from another hog sticking out of his skull...Or maybe he was born with a siamese piggy twin under his skin that never grew past the size of a fetus.

Maybe I'll cough up a few pics after you guys play awhile....unless Q2 wants another month or so of suspense.

BTW....that's awesome to have a live pic of that guy.

If you didn't live in the desert....I would have said the ears were froze off. So knowing pigs from our farm - I'd agree with jackrabbit too, they most likely got chewed off when it was younger.

And to me it just looks like it has a deformed skull and maybe a unusually long overbite.

At a place where I used to keep my horses and hunt, I saw quite a few cases where there would be missing ears. The missing ears would not be on pigs but on fully grown cattle. Roving packs of dogs would would attack the cattle and take them down. On Sunday morning my friend Tony was taking a Doctor and his wife for a horseback ride on the 8800 acre ranch, and came across a pack of 9 dogs that had a bull down. Tony had his carbine with him and shot and killed 5 of the 9 dogs. This happened just across the river north of Ventura.

OK,
The shaft of the arrow stuck through his skull, it went through both his ears and broke off. In time the skull grew over the shaft, forming the big distorted lump you see at the top of his head. His ears probably became infected and fell off. That is my very best guess.

Scott stop that butt wiggling or I'm going to short sheet you here at the resort.
