Youth Bow Question

As many of you know, Arrowhead sent Lil Buck-eye a very nice Fred Bear compound bow last year. Before that, he was shooting a Lil Brave traditional, but the draw was way too long.
We have been mired in the middle for a while now and he is getting frustrated. I want to fix this ASAP, so he does not lose interest and spend 5 hours daily on the Wii.
The weight on the compound bow is still too high, even dialed all the way down. He wants to be able to shoot arrows without only 20% of them sticking in the target due to lack of velocity.
I was considering getting him the Martin youth bow as a 'tweener, until he gains enough strength to use his nice compound bow. The Lil Brave may do more harm than good now. He is right handed but shoots lefty and is left eye dominant. He needs to use site pins and get used to using the other eye. You all are quite good at issues like these. I welcome all of your opinions.

those are good questions right there.

also a good alternative for kids to shoot at are balloons. he can pop them and if the arrow doesn't stick he still has "feedback" that he hit the mark by popping the balloons.

I just ordered a Mathews Genesis for a friends boy. They also have a mini Genesis as well.

The Genesis has no letoff so the draw length is unlimited up to 15-31". It's adjustable from 10-20 lbs.
Says it shhots with the same force as a 35 lb re-curve.

I was shooting one the other day and it was fun.

Try some thinner arrows to get them to stick as well.

The Genesis is a great starting bow. The only bad thing is the peak draw weight. At 20lbs, he really couldn't ever hunt with it. Mathews has a new bow (ignition) with a fully adjustable cam that increases the draw weight as the draw length is increased. The draw weight is 20lbs-50lbs, draw length 19"-26", depending on his age either the genesis or the ignition should work. Hope that helps.

Look at the Mission line (matthews) as well; they have a youth/women's bow for $280 that goes 17 to 50 lbs. and 15-30". I was looking at that for my wife.

Just a little food for thought.....i am almost positive that you can buy a diamond edge in a low weight and when he groes out of it you can call bowtech and order the next size up in limb weight and he has a hole new bow...not quite sure of the details....maybe dwagoner can shed a little more light on this cuz i think he has more details about it

Make a target, frame a box and fill with dirty socks and those t-shirts you have stating "Ohio State, Property of University of Florida", and cover with a piece of cardboard and one of those huge 100M targets them FITA folks use.


I just made one for my five year old, my target is thick and tough as heck and Jack was getting frustrated he could only stick an arrow in if it hit a worn out spot from daddy's broadheads.

Very good advice.

The Bear youth bow that was given to him is brand new and very nice. It is just a bit too much for him to yank back right now. I wonder if it is just as easy as having him work on pulling back the compound bow every day? It has to be a 20 lb draw right now. At 7.5, he should be able to handle it. He's purty strong. Although I refuse to let him use a release. I was told that it is better to learn 'em without the aid of the release.
The balloon idea is one I forgot about. Still, w/ the traditional bow, he doesnt really "aim". He puts it where he thinks it should go and lets it fly. Sorda like his Uncle One Track. I want to get away from that bow so I can work on him using the pins, anchor point and all the mechanical stuff. That Bear has a lot of power. I killed that boar in my front yard last year with it.

That Mathews bow could be a great answer as well. That way, mom could use it as well.

yes they have a youth program to upgrade to higher poundage, read it in some of the manuals on their site, covers the EDGE and CUTTER, im sure it may be for the new 09 like Razor Edge also but not sure. They Cutter is a lower draw weight but still all adjustable cams for DL, Edge is a step up and can definitely be used as a hunting rig for later on, seen a 50#er shoot 225fps with only a 25" DL so there very capable, heres the info on the "diamond exchage" program for the edge and cutter, great deal for a $45 swap up to have a bow that you can grow into

The Browning Micro Adrenaline is a SUPER bow for the youth! It has a draw lenght that adjust from 18" to 28" with two set screws on each cam WITHOUT a bowpress! The bows come in 20 - 30 and 40 lb limbs, so as they grow you can adjust the draw lenght in about 2 minutes. The bows are super accurate and really fast shooting light carbon arrows and 75 to 85 grain braodheads. My wift has one, and she has taken several game animals with it. Our youth archery club also has about 50 of these bows and never had any trouble with them!
