Great glass at a great price from Cabela's at $699.99. If you buy now Cabela's has a year end clearance and they'll put a rebate coupon in your box that's good until 1/9/05. I just got my order from Cabela's and got one.
At the deer/elk hunting seminar by Duane Adams & Durwood Hollis at Raahauges Shooting Sports Fair in Norco they pushed Zeiss Binocs but when I remarked not everyone can afford to spend $1500 for binocs they stated Pentax binocs were a good set to purchase for glassing using a tripod.
At $1,500 and with mention of a tripod, I bet they were referring to the 15 power glass.
For the 10x, I don't think you can beat the Ziess 10x40. I've had mine for about five years. They are awesome. They are industructable. With the Crooked Horn bino strap, they become part of you.
For 15x, I have the Minox. I think I paid about $700 for those. (You have to be careful, I see them being sold for $1,100 and all the way down to $700.) I hunted wth Duwane Adams in November. His entire crew had the 15x Swaro. I spent some time behind their Swaros, and thats some dang nice glass. However, for less than half the cost, my Minox were impressive. The difference in quality was just slightly less. I actually came to the realization that I don't need to upgrade for a long time.
I have Leupold 10x40 binocs that serve me well and 2 3x9x40 with CPC Reticle Leupold Scopes on my 2 20+ yr old Sako Finnbear in 06 & Sako Finnsport in 300wm both have been bedded in Brownell's Bisonite and they are accurate.
There are lots of less expensive binocs than swarovski & zeiss that will work as well in fact Duwayne Adams mentioned a Pentax 15x binocs at his deer seminar at Raahauges Shooting Sports Fair 6/01 that is a good reasonably priced binoc to use with a tripod to seek deer in their bedding areas. The major companies that manufacture rifle scopes have cleaned up their production and leveled the playing field. Most of the major players make products that are good enough so that the average hunter would find it difficult to notice that much difference in the optics they check out.One can play the name game but my Leupolds that I purchased in the early 80's are as good as anything I've seen and I didn't have to spend $1500 each for them, they suit my purposes fine.
I have had my 10x40 classics for 18 years. They wern't called classics when I bought them. Although I had to send them back to Zeiss for a minor problem, they are as clear as the day I bought them. Can't go wrong with them at the price that they are selling for. Ed F.
I am looking for 10 x 40 zeiss bino's I see you guys say cabelas has the clasic but I dont see them there, are they called conquest modle now? Thats the olny zeiss i see for 699.00. buck
I have a pair of the older generation of the Ziess glass and they are GREAT. Worth every penny, very very clear.Cabelas has a good price on the new ones...
The 10x40 Zeiss Classic was discontinued and Cabela's snapped a bunch of them up a year or so ago. They may have sold out, you'd have to call them to see if they have any left. Zeiss still produces the Classic line, but not the 10x40. The Conquest, a decent binocular is not the best glass in its price range. For the same kind of money, I'd seriously look at Kahles or Minox. The Conquest is however the lightest of the bunch if that means anything.
I got a pair My dad has a pair All the guides I have hunted with in nevad have a pair and we all love them. They are good and at a good price. Just make sure the optics on your rife are up to Ziess quality otherwise you can see it in the binos but not see it in your scope, not a position you want to be in.
Thanks to OneTrack I bought a pair from cabelas for $699.
OH BABY! I love them.
I'll NEVER use low end optics again. We went camping in the high desert a few months ago. I could see better w/ my ZEISS than with my bare eyes! I'm not talking a little better, I'm talking WAY better. We were in a very large canyon and I could make out the individual rocks on the far wall! I was watching a small desert fox (Kit Fox) running around the outside of our camp for about 20 minutes! The light transmission these bino's have is INCREDIBLE!
