20011 Tejon JHO Hunt Apps! Hunt is May 20-22nd

We have used a game cart in some areas on Tejon and they have worked out well "in some areas". I agree, that most areas on Tejon are way to steep to bring a game cart down for removal. IMO, Radios really are hit or miss on Tejon. You get yourself deep in a canyon with a downed hog, its very hard gettin out on the radio, unless guys are right above you on the road.

I got mine in as soon as I could. It was hard, giving up that pig tag...but I stuck it in the envelope, and put it in the mail. The check wasn't easy to send, but it's better than the last time, when I had to drive 500 miles each way. This time, I drive only 45 miles each way... and don't have to tip a guide. I've gotten two pigs this year, and I've almost gotten to the point where I can cook it right. Still experimenting with recipes. In any case, this will hopefully be my trifecta, and I will be in food for quite a while.

Everyone has said yes to this question before. I think if you check the stats for pig hunting in California, this ranch produces the most recorded pig kills in the State.

CAMPING/LODGING: Dry camping on the south side in Bear Trap Canyon. Paved road into the fairly flat campsite so trailers and motorhomes can make it in. Porta potties for rest rooms. No water or electric available.

NEW HOG HUNTERS: We try and pair up the new guys with the more experienced guys to help make sure the new guys learn as much as they can and to help them get a shot if possible. Most guided hunts now are running over $600 so this is a great way to go pig hunting and an even better deal if you are from SoCal, it's close.

VEHICLES: No quad type ATVs but you can use the Rhinos type ORVs. 4wd or high clearance vehicle is recommended but not necessary. You must buy insurance from Tejon for this hunt for 1 year.

TERRAIN: is varied, from steep and deep to rolling hills to flat benches. You'll find pigs in all areas so if you're older or a bit out of shape you can still have a good chance at seeing a pig. The last 2 hunters I helped shoot a pig on Tejon we were 1/2 mile from a road and the other one 1/4 from the road. The hard core guys take packs and drop off into the infamous straight up and down canyons and then walk out the pig after boning it out. You can even road hunt the ranch if you want.

WEAPONS: allowed are bow, pistol, shotgun or rifle for this hunt. This hunt is in the lead free zone of CA so you will need lead free ammo.

WEATHER: End of May could be getting pretty hot or even a late spring storm. Plan for either one. Ranch is at 3600 feet and in the mtns so a storm can roll in fast. Brings chains, a long handled shovel, high lift jack and tow strap if you have them.

HOGS ON TEJON: Most of the hogs on Tejon are the wild black or brown colored type with boars up to 300 lbs our group has taken. Tusks have run up to 3 to 4 inches that I've seen but the big tuskers are the exception. Most run around a couple inches. You can shoot a meat pig 125 lbs or trophy hunt the big boars, whatever you want.

MEAT PROCESSING: There is a nice skinning rack at the campground that Rich W. made and we'll have lights and some tables set up. You can skin and cut up your own hog there or we can show you how and help you do it if you need help. If you just want to fields dress your pig and then take it to a meat processor you can do that too. There are several butchers within an hour or two of Tejon.

RECOMMENDED GEAR:

GPS or compass and map. You can buy a map of Tejon at check in, they're $10. The place is huge and you can get turned around real easy in some of the canyons.
Snake chaps or boots. Lots of rattlers on this ranch and the oats get thigh high so you can't see where you're walking many times.
Backpack or pack frame if you have one to carry out hog meat if you drop one way down in a canyon and have to bone it out.
Binos to help glass up pigs and cover more ground.
Shooting sticks or bi-pod, many shots are cross canyon and you need a good rest.
Rangefinder to make sure of that cross canyon distance.
Lots of rope to drag up a pig out of a hell hole if you don't want to bone them out and pack out. I carry 300ft, some carry 500ft and more. Some mount a rope wench on the rear of their hunting rigs.
Good field dressing knife and sharpener.
Meat bags or pillow cases to put meat in if you pack the hog out.
Hydration pack or some way to stay hydrated, one of the biggest "I wish I had" regrets from guys who end up hiking way more than they thought they would and had to gut a pig at the end.
FRS radio or some type of 2 way radio like a HAM radio. We try and monitor a FRS channel for those needing help or that get lost. I have a HAM radio I use for long range commo on the ranch but nothing works down in the canyons, we do relays to help get the word out in that situation.
Wet weather gear if you have it. We've hunted in the snow too so good warm boots if the weather looks nasty. Fog can roll in some mornings.

ALCOHOL/DRUGS: We are guests on the ranch and the last thing we want is an someone getting shot or doing something stupid while under the influence. We have no problem with hunters cracking a beer after the guns are up but if you are found hunting while drunk or under the influence you will be asked to leave the ranch and you will lose your hunt money. Tejon also does not tolerate any bending of this rule. THERE IS NO TOLERANCE here, we've had some issues with a couple folks and that is not what this hunt is about. If you have drinking/drug issues please DO NOT sign up for this hunt.

32 apps out as of today, looks like we are going to hit the 450 price this year no problem. I will out of town all next week for work, Please get me the apps by the 18th so we will have some time just incase there are missing items that Tejon needs. I am also leaving for Hawaii the 28th for a week. I plan on sending the apps out on Monday the 25th to Tejon to ensure they get our apps on time.

I am not sure what Tejon hunt Schedule is but this is the only JHO group hunt for the year unless somebody else puts one on. From their website their last rifle hunt under their pig managment hunts is May 6th-8th, and June 3rd-5th (Archery)
