2005 DIY WY Pronghorn

Been 20 years and I'm thinking speed goat. I've hunted area 47 with pretty good success but my buddy who lined up things passed on. Is there a big problem DIY and finding land to hunt on? I dont believe a guide is needed unless you are looking for a wall hanger. I'm an average kinda hunter... Another thought is that we use to drive out but with the price of gas it's almost as cheap to fly. Rountrip Atlanta to Casper is < $380 Any words of wisdom or recommendations. Wonder if any of those WY ranchers would like to chase some Georgia feral hogs....

My friend did it the first time this year in that state with no problem. He said they had many opportunities and easy access. Getting tags was not an issue either.

I hunted WY for the first time this year. There are plenty of lopes and public land. Talk to the biologist or warden for the area you want to hunt and you should be able to get a list of landowners will give you access. It worked for me.

I just drove through WY twice on my way to and from MO. Geez, there are hundreds of thousands of those suckers along the freeway. Every hill I went over, there was a herd of at least 50. If you cannot find them on public land, then you have your eyes closed.

I assume WY has pretty good public land access. But, you may want to talk to some cattle ranchers. We chatted with a few at a cafe and they hate antelop and would probably pay you to shoot them. I guess they get in their hay barns and they feed along side their cattle. The offered to fill our truck with antelop before we left. I was tempted

I live in SW Wyoming and can recommend a lot of public land units. The units I'm familiar with have good populations of antelope and are mostly all public land. If anyone else wants info you can PM me or email me.

Maybe a 2005 Jesses Antelope hunt?

I was thinking I would post, "just talk to a local in that area..." and then younghunter effectively made the offer.

As to trophies... they are on public lands, too. A co-worker of mine shot a monster this year near Boulder, wyo. 18 inches on one side, 17 3/4 on t'other...

Until I saw that beast, I was pretty proud of my 14 inch buck...

I will be out there from Sept 28th through Oct. 20th or so.

I seen a show on the mens channel where in Wright Wy. the golf course was soliciting hunters to come and shoot the lope off the course(free) it was bow only and you had to be off the course before 8am. It looked pretty easy though if your looking for a challenge. They did show a couple P&Y bucks. I wrote down the number if anyone is intersted. How about the 1st annual JHO lope shoot golf tourney

FYI the dead line for a draw is March 15th, but we bought doe tags over the counter you could get two.

A group hunt would be fun.

I'm familiar with all the units around Rock Springs but for a group hunt we will want public land units with good odds. The units south of RS have terrible odds, so we will have to choose between area 93 or 92 or even both, they are north of RS. Have parties put in for both. Both units are almost all public land and plenty of antelope, nothing huge but some good bucks are scattered around.

Putting in for parties will be the best choice, kinda an all-or-nothing deal, if 1 draws they all draw.

Unit 92 and 93 are only at a 10% draw, any areas with better odds that your familure with? Maybe 96, or 55 or 56? What about tossing in some Muleys, hows the area 131 look or under a region K general tag? Same goes with D and E general, any good deer running around there? Would be real cool to get an JHO Annual Antelope hunt going like they have with the Coues/Javelina in AZ.

Unit 96 is a good unit with around 19 percent draw odds. Also 92 is another unit im really familiar with, not sure what the draw odds are. Both of these units have trophy potential, I've seen some really really big bucks in unit 92.

Unit 131 for deer is a sleeper unit for mule deer, there are some monsters there but they are the smartest deer I've ever seen. During deer season they are completely noctornal and bed down in deep sage brush. Its kinda like pheasant hunting, if you don't have a dog(s) (pushers) you have to pretty much walk onto them. OVerall deer numbers are really low but I've seen some big bucks in those units and picked up some sheds from recordbook bucks there. Its a tough hunt as I hunt it every year since its only like a 5 minute drive from my house, but I have yet to harvest a big buck there(slung some lead at some big ones though). If someone has some extra cash and wants to put in for deer I can give some great info via email on where to locate some bucks.

After looking over all the units and the odds etc. I think we should settle on unit 96 simply because it has the best odds. Unit 92 only has 10 percent too...

If we could get two parties of 5 each to put in that would work. Or does everyone want to just put in individually or in partners????

Since it looks like most people would be in different states, it will be difficult to get everyone's information down and into one envelope. Unless there's an easy way to do it. It may be just better to do it individually and whoever draws can post up here, and then just go from there.
