Here are a couple of pictures of a 6x6 elk I took while hunting alone on public land in western Colorado August of 2006. I was in a clump of trees watching a trail at first light that led from a wallow to a bedding area when I heard him crossing behind me. Fortunately there was a small opening in the trees I was able to shoot through as he passed 26 yards behind me. At first I thought I must have missed since he walked uphill in a calm manner. However, after hearing what sounded like an elk falling and then finding my blood covered arrow, I became more confident. I didn't really need to follow the blood trail since I was downwind of where he fell and was able to follow the odor to this ready to rut bull. Ron

Wow, that's a toad anywhere and a real monster for CO. Fine job.

That's one heck of a bull!

Even if you did post him up a year late.

They don't have bulls that big in CO. Don't you read the magazines!!! Congrats! That's an incredible bull, and especially in CO with a Bow. You are my hero.

That's a darn good bull. Was that a "do-it-yourself" hunt?

Awesome.

This was a do it yourself archery hunt on public land and I was alone.

By talking with some local ranchers and ranch hands during a rifle hunt in this area several years ago, I found out about some of the better areas to hunt on nearby public lands. They also said there were trophy class size elk in those areas. I took a medium sized five pointer during that rifle hunt and never saw any trophy elk- but, I still believed in their advice.

Fortunately, as far as the pack out, it was only about 3/4 of a mile back to my vehicle, downhill on a good trail. The main challenge was that the weather was warm, so, I had to hustle into the night and get the quartered and deboned meat out by backpack before the next day. I was able to get the meat to a processor the next day. The main reason I didn't show the pictures on this site last year was that this hunt was written up in Trophy Hunter Magazine , which required that I wait till the article was published.
