Sonke Mastrop, the deputy director of the DFG, spoke before the CA Fish n Game Commission today to recommend big game tags for the fall 2010 hunts. Most antelope tag quotas are the same or with small changes except for Zone 1 which has a significant change recommendation from DFG to go from 8 tagsin 2009 to to 0 tags in 2010. The reason given by Sonke was poor performance in the antelope herd there.
Bonus Point Recovery and Tag Refunds on cancelled hunts
The commission also discussed tag refunds and bonus point recovery if a person cannot make their hunt. The DFG had 2 options they proposed and they recommended option #2.
Option 1) Bonus point recovery if a person had an emergency like a death in family, medical, military deployment. Your appeal for the bonus point recovery would be by paperwork submitted to prove your case.
Option 2) Request an appeal to recover your bonus point with no paperwork.
No acts of nature like a fire closure would be allowed for bonus point recovery in either option.
The commission also talked about refunding the tag money if a applicant had to bow out of a hunt. One commissioner claimed we should eat the $300 for an elk tag even if it created a hardship for the applicant to not get the tag money refunded. What a snarky dude he is claiming the state needs the money and tough luck for us hunters in these slim economic times. Someone needs to clue this guy in that not everyone is pulling down 100K and can afford to just blow off $300.
