Found a rifle this weekend and attempting to reunite with its rightful owner. Found in California D17. Message me and let me know the model, caliber and where you lost it and we can arrange getting it back to you!

Might consider having the serial number run to find out who bought it.

The serial number can be researched by the sheriff's department as "found property". It's a good idea to run it as it might have been stolen. Long gun purchase records weren't kept in a computer data base until California required them to be kept a few years ago. All long gun records are kept as a paper file in some warehouse somewhere.

Keep in mind, the sheriff's department might keep the rifle in their possession pending a serial number search. Also, you might be able to keep the rifle if no owner is located but, you would need to have the rifle transferred to an FFL holder, file out the normal background paperwork (Form 4473) and wait ten days for your background check.

One caveat - it would be illegal for you to return the rifle on your own. This would be considered an "illegal transfer of a firearm by an unlicensed individual", a felony. I know, I know, a bunch of BS but there it is.

When I was on the job, I "found" a lot of weapons dropped or ditched in bushes, under leaf litter, even partially buried by "non-hunters" as I approached them in the field. Unfortunately for them, I had already watched them actively hunting from a distance so........"sign here, press hard, seven copies".
