Fall Pig Hunts Offered in Yolo County

September 6, 2011 by CA DFG News

Media Contacts:
Victoria Barr, DFG Wildlife Branch, (916) 445-4034
Dana Michaels, DFG Communications, (916) 322-2420

The Department of Fish and Game (DFG) will conduct eight permit-only wild pig hunts on Bobcat Ranch in Yolo County between Oct. 24 and Nov. 18.A total of 64 wild pig hunters will have access to the private property during two archery hunts, two apprentice hunts and four general method hunts. All are two-day hunts.

Applications will be accepted for parties of up to two licensed hunters for the archery and general periods. Apprentice hunters must have a 2011/2012 junior hunt license, and must each fill out a separate application. Applicants may apply for more than one period but will ultimately only be drawn for one.

The Bobcat Ranch is located in Yolo County’s Vaca Mountain foothills, west of Winters. Hunting under the Shared Habitat Alliance for Recreational Enhancement (SHARE) Program will help achieve the ranch’s long-term conservation management objectives, including controlling the wild pig population.

Applications must be received by 4 p.m. on Sept. 29, 2011. More information and applications are available at: www.dfg.ca.gov/wildlife/hunting/share/index.html.

This opportunity was made possible by the SHARE Program, which offers incentives to private landowners who allow hunts on their property. Participating landowners receive liability protection and may receive compensation for providing public access to or through their land for wildlife-dependent recreational activities. The goal of the SHARE Program is to provide additional hunting, fishing and other recreational access on private lands in California.

In July, DFG secured a $500,000 federal grant to support the creation of additional public hunting and fishing opportunities through the SHARE Program. This hunt is one of the new game bird and big game hunting opportunities expected to happen statewide as a result of that grant. More information on the grant can be found here: http://cdfgnews.wordpress.com/2011/07/21/dfg-receives-federal-grant-to-support-share-program/.

Did anyone participate last year and if so, any decent stories? Any hog reports on this property? I'm thinking about putting in for the drawing, but it'd be such a bummer if there are only a few to no hogs on the property since I'd be coming all the way from Socal.

I'm guessing by the op that no one other than owners of said ranch or friends have hunted it and that "manage the population" implies there are pigs there to be had.

The ranch is run by the Audobon society. I had a friend who's daughter was drawn for this hunt in May. They couldn't hunt part of the first day, but did see a hog in the distance the first evening. Her alergies kicked her butt that night and she wasn't able to hunt the second day.

A friend called about the hunt and was told 600 people applied for the May hunts. He didn't ask about success.

One quick way to tell if you got drawn is that they list the hunter's home town along with the GO ID number. If you see your home town then maybe it's you!

I got drawn. Have to go log in and see what Date I drew. Wanted the Archery Hunt, but Colorado Elk had priority so I went for rifle. Guess I better go buy another tag for this year.

You must have to wait for the snail mail to show up to find out the dates. There are no dates posted. I would bet it's the two days for me since I am on the bottom of the list unless it is Alphabetical by last name.

Don't think it's alphabetical, I got drawn and am near the top of the list, last name "J". Cant wait for date information. Good luck jerryt!

I've got NOV 17th and 18th. Will most likely only hunt the mornings for this hunt. Unless I see something that looks good for the evening.
