I saw my first antelope in my life and I now know why some people call them speedgoats. Went scouting this weekend and saw 35 antelope over the two period.  I was driving up to Big Sage Resevoir and as soon as I was arrived, there was a herd of 18 animals.  Almost one third were bucks.  None of them were very big though.  From what I could tell, the biggest ones were around 12 inches.  One had some very impressive mass.  The rest of the antelope I saw were in groups of two, three, or four just north of Big Sage.  Does anyone have any suggestions on where I might scout some more?

You have never seen an antelope before but yet you apply and get drawn!!! Some of us have been applying for 37 years just to be able to hunt the herd that runs in our back yard.

Sorry Modocer!!!  Since I've been drawn I have learned quite a bit about the antelope.  It is a very impressive animal.  I understand why you would be a "little" upset.  I would be to if I couldn't hunt my back yard.  I guarentee you that I will show nothing but respect for you're animals and countryside, which is beautiful by the way.  One good thing thats on your side is that I won't be drawn again for ten years.  Good luck to you.

Hey, me again.  I got some info on areas  in the Likely Tables from a local hunter.  Says there were a bunch of goats and no hunters, near some alfalfa...
You goin up with anyone?  Wouldn't mind some company.  A guy from work wants to go with me, but I have my doubts.  He ain't much of an outdoorsman.

Good to see you made the trip.  I will be in Reno next weekend for the Tailhook convention.  I am tempted to go up for an afternoon.  Still too far though.  I feel pretty confident in this guys info, he owns a hunting store.

I feel pretty lucky.  My first year applying and I got it.  I never won anything else though.  Not even cheasy door prizes!!  (Got a great deer area too.)

Corndog  There are lots of antelope around Alturas on alfalfa fields. The only trouble with these is they are all private property and you need written permission to trespass. I know of one property that will let you have a access to their Ranch of about 6000 acres but the used to want 300 dollars. That was a few years ago. The BLM you can hunt doesnt have any crops growing on it that I know of.      Fubar

Hey Corndog, I made it to the boundary of zone 3 in four hours.  I live in Auburn which is two hours from Reno.  You can probably make it to the zone in two hours or so from Reno.  Just go straight up 395.  What convention???

First I'll respond to Fubar.  I checked the DFG maps, and the area this guy is talking about is BLM land that is adjacent to private land.  Says the antelope chow down in the fields then head for the BLM land.  I gotta take him at his word, says there were more than enough to shoot at each day.  Thanks for the heads up.  Don't want to get in any trouble.

Nascarman, I will be at the Tailhook convention.  That is the one 10 years ago where all the Navy Pilots got in trouble for grabbing ass.  Actually it was a frickin witch hunt.  Anyway, after a night of ass grabbin (jk) I would be hard pressed to go up.  I may get the itch though.  I think I'll just go up a day before the opening and check it out.  I've been doing a lot of X-9A scouting.  My wife is starting to think I'm insane.  Scouting while at Tailhook would just confirm that.

By the way, I don't know if you saw that post I made about your bullet selection but you gotta check out these Winchester Supreme (silver-tip) rounds.  They're sweet.  I'm groupin nicely at 200 with a .270.  The trajectories are listed at http://www.winchester.com   I have printed them out and taped them to the stock of my gun.  Also bought the spotting scope and rifle bi-pod.
Hunting just brings out the Christmas in me!

Corndog  Sounds like you have done your homework. BLM next to an alfalfa field would be a good place to be. When I was there an antelope that appeared to be about 16 inches was on the refuge and would never leave. He was still there when I left for home. We used to stop and look at him every day. Guess that is how he got to be so big. There are a lot of antelope there. I dont think I would shoot the first one I see.           Fubar
