I have been looking into getting one of these the last few weeks. Have any of you shot one of these yet. I read that it has 37 pounds of recoil with a 350 grain slug. I don't think this version with the 24" barrel is ported like the first 1895M with its 18" barrel.

Brian S,
Three of us bought these Marlin 1895 45-70 lever actions. Mine is a NON-ported 22" rifle. I shoot 420 grain Super Hard Cast +P Garrett ammo at 1,850 FPS. The recoil is a wallop and without the P.A.S.T. shoulder recoil pad it will bring tears to my eyes when shooting at the bench. At the bench, I cannot keep the rifle forend from jumping out of my hand at the recoil. My buddy has a 1895 Marlin Guide Gun with the 18 1/2" PORTED barrel. There is a big difference in the recoil. At the bench, the ported rifle does not even jump out of the sandbags or jump out of my hand. The recoil is there but the muzzle jump is 80% plus or minus minimized. The awesome thing is that the big 420 grain Super Hard Cast slug moving out at 1,850 FPS will flatten anything legal to hunt in North America, including Brown Bear, Wild Vancouver Bulls in Hawaii and American Buffalo. The pounding recoil is just a big reminder that it will stop a charge from some of these angry, cornered big game and maybe, just maybe save a lucky hunter from being chewed to pieces by these big, biting, charging animals. The yawning .458 caliber muzzle opening and the big, heavy, cigar sized +P cartridges are a good confidence builder that it is ENOUGH GUN. It will pass thru a 350 lb. wild hog from any angle. God Bless.

I ordered it yesterday. The 1895MXLR is stainless in .450 marlin with a 24" barrel. I will look into one of those pads and maybe talk to a gunsmith about getting some porting done.

I have been thinking on getting a big bore lever action .What do you site it in a o at 100 yards I would think that 450 will fall fast.

I and my buddy sight ours at 3" high at 100 yds. and it is point blank range out to about 200 yds. Maybe even out to 225 yds. or 250 yds. Depends on the speed of the bullet. The 420 grn. +P Garrett Cartridges will be point blank out to 250 yds. with a 3" high zero at 100 yds. It is just an awesome rifle to carry with the intention of hammering wild pigs, or even one ton animals like the American Buffalo or wild Vancouver bulls in Hawaii(as posted by Doccherry in the Hog and Javelina forum). It will kill pigs like it was hit by the hammer of Thor. 'Nuff said.

Here is a pic of my 450. I added a Nikon pro staff 3x9 with warne stainless rings and a warne one piece base. I have only shot the 325's in it so far with pretty decent groups. I've put a box or so it with iron sites, and a few round with the Nikon on it to get zero'd. Next time out I'll post a range report with some group info.

Brian, you can send a rifle or pistol direct to Magna-port and avoid the gunsmith middleman charge, they will just charge you and send it to Magna-port anyway, you don't need to be a licensed dealer to mail your gun to Magna.

Sounds like having it ported would be a good idea for soemone like me-sort of a recoil whimp.

Mag Na Port does a great job, I've had a number of handguns ported and tuned by them. Just be aware that their turnaround time can be 6 months or more. Call the to see. They do first class work, you can depend on them.

Can't tell from the picture, but it may have enough room to add a muzzle brake? The muzzle brake should not effect your velocity, where as the porting will.

A Limb Saver recoil pad installed will help greatly.

Brian, if you're still thinking about porting or a brake, you might give the guys at KDF a call. They did the brake for my Savage in about a week, although they say their average turn-around is two weeks.

I haven't really looked into modifying it. I can stand to shoot it a dozen times or so before I start hearing someone telling me to walk toward the light. I have been shooting the 325 grain Hornady ammo and its a pretty accurate combination. I may take this gun with me on a guided whitetail hunt we are going on in November to Sask. Canada.

FYI, I got a 10 day turnaround on my .44Mag from Magna this year, maybe I was lucky but they're nice people to deal with.
