Oh I totally agree. Was a very selective and exciting way to hunt . I never tried it but totally supported the houndsmen . Such BS we deal with in every part of hunting in this state. From the rules , access and unlawful taxation.

Issues with hunting and predators are not specific to Calif. I have knowledge of SE Alaska and western Oregon and they have been thru issues over the years as well. Both have had to change hunting rules to try to stay ahead of the highly organized attack stratagies of the anti-hunting public & organizations.

Being a Black Bear (big game) hunting guide in SE Ak I was involved in Wolf, Black & Brown bear, Blacktail & Mt Goat issues, studies and decisions.

Wolves will kill and eat Black Bear, both cubs and mature bear. There have been several times I know of when Wolves caught and killed and ate denning adult Black Bear. I've seen some Wolf scat with evidence of Black Bear in it. I have seen several times when Wolves put the sneak or chased Black Bear. Also seen Black Bear put the stalk on adult Deer. Seems like the Black Bear fawn kill is around 50 percent of SE Ak island Blacktail. Wolves are not much for fawn hunting & killing. One Biologist told me it is partly because of not the energy return for the energy spent since fawns are kinda not much there type thing.

Wolves require about one deer (or equivalent food value) per Wolf every 7 to 14 days. So a pack of 7 Wolves need 1 deer every day or two. But they can also fill that need by killing Beavers, some hunt Seals, Geese & Ducks, Black Bears, Mt Goats, Salmon and vegatation. And when there is livestock or Elk available, another choice. Right now in Oregon about 50 percent of the Wolf packs don't kill livestock.

Seems like here in Oregon when the Wolves move in the Lions move on. And the Black bear give them grief also.

It's a big predator fest out there ! That's great insight and I'm definitely learning more about predator/ prey relationships. Amazing there are any deer or elk left. Anything we can learn about wolves is much needed. Thanks for the info .

. My dad and I were on a canoe trip in the boundary waters of Minnesota/ Ontario. We did ten days when I was a young adult. We were fishing an inlet to one of the lakes and heard a bunch of commotion . A whitetail doe jumped in the lake followed by a whole Wolfpack one after another. She was exhausted on the other side as she got out and the wolves did not take long to catch her . We couldn't see the final take down but could hear and imagine the whole scene . It was loud and intense. They howled all evening. Can't see that stuff on your couch !!! Never forget those things

Hahahaha. It's definitely a guess. Last year was 25000. Now around 60k . Baby bear boom ? there are definitely plenty of them

There has been a bear sighted in Pine Mountain Club (LPNF) that has triplets.
I went out for bear archery season last weekend. Saw tracks. about it. Supposed to be a hot weekend coming up...I just might practice.

Oldtool, once you kill yours this year--it'll so much fun getting a rug made (if you want)--having a cool skull and all that meat. Plus, if you kill one with good fat--chicharones!
