From my hiding place, the piercing squawk of a Steller’s jay announced that something was wrong. Earlier that morning, on the edge of a meadow, I’d seen a newborn fawn, four or five pounds, maybe one or two hours old, staggering to take its first steps. Momma was alongside. I’d returned to the area in national forest, now with my camera and a 200-mm zoom lens, and a video camera, hoping to get the classic shot of new life in the wild.
