Anyone headed up for the A13 archery opener, Aug 15th. I got drawn with a friend. And will be there, camping at Gold Lake. 1st time in X7a, I've seen some nice buck's, looking in from D3. Went up to scout this pasted weekend, and got as far as Bassit's, at 12:15 Saturday, and had to cut it short, before we could even get in. My friend's truck over heated, and so did the transmission.
So I'll have to check it out, the Thursday and Friday, before the opener. If anyone has any info on the area, that would be great. Good luck to everyone.

I would get as far away from d3 as you can! that is beautiul country up their and I have hunted d3 in that area but If I had that tag I would be looking between hwy 89 and the pacific crest (closer to 89) on the road to jackson meadows. Any where on that ridge on the north side of the road. If you dont mind hunting down lower the areas around the haskell peaks and the sierra valley holds some very good bucks.

Oh yeah, Theres a convinience store in portola owned by a farely well known hunter named Jerry Dollard. Hes got a 33" buck on the wall in their he shot with a bow in x7a that was in the eastmans bowhunting journal a few years back. If you can somehow contact him he could be a good source of info. last I heard he was trying to sell his store. If hes moving out of the area he might spill the beans.

Jerry might spill the beans, but ill tell you that buck was shot on private land. I use to see that buck on the gravel road to my house every once in a while. And Jerry's son has an archery tag in x7a this year too. They got permission to hunt there again. So it might still be under wraps. I think Jerry still may be in wyoming with his oldest son who just moved there.

Most of the GOOD area around portola is private. I have a x7a (rifle) tag this year and im hoping to get access from some of my nieghbors, Already have permission from one but the goal is to get it where the Dollard buck was shot (also a nieghbor of mine). If not I will go accross the valley behind loyalton. Check out Antelope road just south of Loyalton on highy 49. Big burn areas over there and lots of bucks. Also might want to check the west side of 395. . The good thing for you is archery. Alot of the people around here will let you hunt there land if you just ask. Where they aren't so willing with rifle hunters. Also may want to poke around SeirraVille. There are so many good areas around here, its hard to decide which one to check out...

I'm with goingdeep... That area between hwy89 and Webber lake usually holds deer. Also just east the zone line near haypress and church camp.
