OUTDOORS REPORT

The weather cooperated, and albacore bit for boats on 11/2 -day runs out of San Diego yesterday, setting the stage for what could be the season's first big weekend of offshore fishing.

The Pacific Queen, with Captain Bill Cavanaugh, called into Fisherman's Landing and reported limits of albacore – 70 longfins for his 14 anglers. Cavanaugh said his fishermen had their five-albacore limits by 11 a.m., according to Jack Mahon at Fisherman's Landing. The Pacific Queen fished 90 miles from Point Loma.

Mahon said the Prowler and the Pacific Queen are scheduled for 11/2-day trips leaving tonight from Fisherman's Landing.

At H&M Landing, the Indian, with Captain Chris Randel, called in limits of albacore for his 13 anglers. The Indian is going back out tonight for a 11/2 -day run to the tuna grounds. The Top Gun (Captain Bob Taft), the Producer (Captain Ray Sobieck) and the Bright and Morning Star also are on line tonight for trips.

The action yesterday followed a catch turned in by the Legend, with Captain Shawn Trowbridge. His anglers caught 62 albacore and four yellowtail in the same area, 90 to 100 miles south.

Ryan Ross at Seaforth said the Endeavor (captains David Ikeda and John Glawson) left last night for a 11/2-day run. The Legend leaves tonight, and the Outer Limits is scheduled for Sunday night.

"When I came in this morning we only had five reservations for the Endeavor's trip, but right now we have 16 going," Ross said. "The reports from today definitely sparked some interest."

Weather was the big party-wrecker last weekend. Just when the bite seemed to be taking off, the seas came up and the bite shut down.

But the captains reported flat, calm seas yesterday, and the fish responded.
