Albacore Update

Pete Thomas. L.A. Times

6/13/03

Crewman Kevin Correia of the Pacific Queen said he was just answering the call of duty Monday when he donned a mask and snorkel and jumped overboard to save an angler's first fish.

The albacore had run under the boat and wrapped the line around the propeller, breaking the line but remaining stuck to a strand wrapped around the prop. Correia could see the fish "at deep color," jumped in, hand-lined it to within range of another crewman's gaff, and the catch was made.

It was just one of many exciting moments on a day when 18 anglers boated 90 albacore in an area 105 miles southwest of Fisherman's Landing in San Diego.

Capt. Bill Cavanaugh , who is operating on a 1 1/2-day schedule, said the popular game fish are slowly moving within the 100-mile range of the day boats and that a full-scale albacore frenzy is imminent.
