Hello,

I was lucky to get drawn for antelope in lassen period 2 and also deer in x5b. I'm looking for suggestions on where to find antelope on public land. I've hunted for deer before east of Ravendale, but never came across antelope in that area. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Antelope Lassen Unit

Hey Huntdux,

Wow- you won the lottery this year a CA antelope tag and X-5B tag!

I drew the Lassen antelope tag back in '93 (this was before CA started pref points and it was the first year I applied!). Check out the area right along Hwy 395 just south of Madeline on the west side of the hwy. Its and old ranch that was subdivided into 40 ac parcels, but there has been very little development. When I hunted, there were roads cut in with road signs, but all the "roads" were pretty much improved 2-tracks. There was a guy that lived in a house just off the west side of the hwy (south of Madeline) that sort of the caretaker for the devlopment and he gave us written permission and a map with ideas where to hunt. There's a big alfalfa ranch just to the south that the antelope feed in then bed down in the sage flats. We also got into some goats in the hills just southeast of Madeline. Good luck!

Thanks so much for the info. I plan on scouting later in the month and in August. I'll keep you posted.

Check your private messages. After I finish sending this, I'll PM you and can help you out. My son drew a first season Lassen tag last year, and we found some very nice bucks in multiple locations. We spent over a week scouting prior to the season, spread over several trips, and then spent 4 days hunting before he took the buck pictured here. HIs buck was 15 1/2", and we saw a couple that were much bigger, including one that scored 85" B&C. Lassen is a great unit, one of my favorite places to hunt.

Thanks DLS,

Awesome pronghorn. Hope to see something like that. If you like to "huntdux" let me know. We have a beautiful club in the Butte Sink.

I'll be hunting in the Ravendale area in Period 2. Maybe we'll run into each other? There's Antelope everywhere up there. Once you hit Mud flat, all the way to Madeline, there's Antelope on Both sides of 395.

Thanks,

I plan on checking out that area, but it seems like most of that area near Madeline is private land.

Huntdux, I re-sent you my PM. Better watch out, this conversation could easily turn to duck hunting instead of pronghorns.

Does DFG still do the pre-hunt orientation meeting for antelope hunters? If they do, make it point to go. They had maps on the wall of all the zones and where you would find antelope marked on them. I took my maps and marked them up with the data from their maps.
