Sounds like a great hunt!

It was awesome. I can't even complain about not getting a DRT shot, pursuing him into the brush and getting up close and personal to finish it off was the best part. I couldn't shoot rifle that day, but my pistol skills were on point and probably prevented some potential injuries.

Parkfield has some great hunting. The Millers ranch has its fair share of hogs. I remember counting 75+ hogs in the fields they own many years ago. Haven't hunted the Van Horns property in a LONG time (Gloria & Martin Vanhorn).

Lots of hogs in that area. According to the Miller's it's not uncommon to see about 200 or so hogs each time you go out.

I personally didn't see that many, but can imagine I would if I were to stay around longer.

Martin Van Horn RIP, died a few years ago according to his daughter Cindy but they still offer unguided hog hunts.

Martin Vanhorn was a wealth of information on hog hunting. I remember sitting around the dinner table and him taking off his shirt to show us all the battle wounds he had from chasing hogs in pig tunnels. He was a super nice guy. Gloria was a very nice lady as well. When I knew them, they were getting up there in age....

You stayed at his house during a hunt? You have some big balls to follow a boar into a tunnel.

Congrats Nate! She's going to roast up nice at your BBQ!

Yes he will.

That is one bad *ss boar he tried to eat your pocket knife! Good thing you stopped him with the pistol! LOL. Congratulations on your first hog and what a memorable one. Well done!

Thanks for sharing the experience Nate! Congratulations! Just to confirm, did you end up hunting Cindy's ranch? and if so, What was the total cost for for the weekend to include your take of course? I'm hoping to get in touch with her if it's affordable. I'll be sure to mention your name to her as well if that's okay?

Thanks. He was a big, ugly MF'r. Memorable indeed. I keep dreaming about that pistol headshot.

I didn't hunt the Van Horns because she was unable to tell me if there was fresh sign. I stuck with my original plan and hunted the Miller Ranch. I paid $700 total. $600 for a 2 day, guided hunt and $100 for 2 days of lodging.

That area is loaded with hogs, I'm willing to bet that if you were to call Cindy and set something up, you could get a hog. Feel free to mention me as well. Good luck!

I ended up hunting the Miller Ranch. Cindy didn't get a chance to do any scouting so I didn't chance it. That entire area is loaded with hogs though and I am willing to bet that if you can track sign, you would be successful.

Feel free to mention me and good luck!

Lemme know how it goes.

When I hunted the Van Horns, they had a few bunkhouses for hunters to stay in while you hunted the ranch. It was adjacent to their main house. We would have dinner almost everynight with Martin & Gloria while at the Ranch. The stories were worth the trip itself. I spent MANY weekends working on that old bunkhouse to make improvments. Brought up a lot of furniture to make it a little more comfortable. Would like to see it nowdays to just see what it looks like and what is left that was donated.

I know a guy that also worked their ranch for a while and is planning a trip out there in a few weeks. I hear that Ol' Martin was quite the Hog Slayer according to his daughter and the locals. That was nice of them to share their table with you while you hunted their ranch.

Nice piggie! Congrats!

Thanks!

Congrats on the great hog. The first of many I'm sure.

Thanks. I hope so! I'm already planning my next trip.
