DFG News Release: For Immediate Release
December 18, 2002
Attention Anglers! Emergency Salmon Closure
The following areas of the Sacramento River and American River will be closed to salmon fishing from January 1 (formerly January 15) through July 15 to reduce the inland harvest of endangered winter-run Chinook salmon.
Emergency closure areas, January 1 (formerly January 15) to July 15, 2003:
" Sacramento River: Bend Bridge to Carquinez Bridge
" American River: Jibboom Street to the river mouth
Sacramento River winter-run Chinook salmon were listed as endangered by the Fish and Game Commission on September 22, 1989. The National Marine Fisheries Service listed the run as endangered under the Federal Endangered Species Act in February 1994.
Previous angling regulations in effect since 1990 were designed to prevent harvest of upstream migrating winter-run Chinook salmon and other depleted stocks by implementing no-retention periods covering the entire time adult winter-run would occur in these areas. Winter-run Chinook salmon occurrence was based on information from the best available data at the time. However, recent data indicates that a high harvest of winter-run Chinook salmon may have occurred in late December 2000 and early January 2001, just prior to the no-retention period. Thus, angling regulations have been altered to prevent future harvest of this endangered population during this new period.
The Fish and Game commission proposes this emergency action pursuant to the authority vested by Sections 200, 203, and 240 of the Fish and Game Code and to implement, interpret, or make specific Sections 200, 203, and 240 of said Code.
Further information for this regulatory action can be found on our website, at http://www.dfg.ca.gov/fg_comm/2002/7_50b5a...ndb156spera.pdf
