well just got back from about 8 days out near casper, wy
between me, my dad, and grandfather. we had
antelope, buck deer, cow elk tags.
antelope were everywhere. dad and grandpa took theirs on the second day.
nothing spectacular, but the circumstances dictated what animals they took more than anything.
i was holding out for one with the bow, but 80 yards was the closest i could get after dozens of stalks.
ended up taking this guy on the last day.
he was nice and old. curled in real nice, and had a broken tip and an ivory tip on the other. having scott do a euro on him.
we were into deer almost everyday. opening morning we had a nice hay field that the rancher had seen multiple larger bucks on the weeks prior. were sitting there waiting for the sun to come up. something passes by grandpa, he cant tell if its a buck. some other guys drive up 2 minutes later, jump it, shoot it... ended up being a 5x5...
oh well.
we saw many other small 2x2s, and spikes. all legal, but nothing worth taking back to CA.
BUT... while scouting the west side of the area for cow elk... we run into these guys. just so happens, the elk area extends a little farther west than the deer zone, so these were about half mile out of our deer zone... kidna hard to stomach, but just seeing them got me pumped. the photos are all through the spotting scope.
this guy was actually in our area, but saw him the day before the opener...
these were the ones just outside of our zone. they were actually in a general draw area!
as far as elk... zip, nada, nothing....
word was they were all bunched up on the area just to the west. after about 5 days without seeing any fresh sign. we decided to pay $150 to hunt the hendrys property. which is "thee place" to go for elk in the area. the few local guys we ran into had the same luck, said they were everywhere during archery season, and have been gone the last couple weeks. even the ranch guys were amazed that the elk hadn't crossed over back into the unit for weeks. one of them worked extra hard to help us score because we were donating one of the cows to him and his family. so anyways..
took some antelope, saw some big bucks, and tried for elk. successful trip, especially hanging out with the old man, and grandpa. getting in as much time as possible before he cant go out wth us anymore.
a couple of sidenotes.
casper is a little far if huting the north west area of elk 120 or deer 34. there is a nice lodge up on the north west area of the unit, looked very nice and would save you about a 1.5 hour drive each way. although the antelope are closer to town and works fine just staying in casper.
Super 8 on CY avenue IS THE PLACE TO STAY while in casper. Breakfast ready at 4:30 am every morning. waffles, bagels, toast, etc... everyday. snacks and other stuff out all day. they also have rooms that have 3 beds for about $80 / night.
ask for the DD3 room.
want to make a mint? open a dennys in casper! the dinning options are pretty bad around there... i mean who doesnt even have a dennys?
heres a couple more random photos.
put the silverado through some toture up in these mountains.
here are some of the deer taken in the casper area (taken at the local bucther shop)
about 90% of the deer we saw had the same 3x3 configuration.
