i have had 2 face to face encounters with wild russin boars my self while hunting the last few years and i am glad they turned and booked the other way because all i was every told by most pig hunters is u better drop that bow and find a tree to climb fast.

so what if you are camping at a state park like Lake Sonoma and u crawl out of your tent to find yourself faceing nusiance a wildhog thats in your campsite and it could be ready to charge and u dont have any weapons to protect yourself what would u do?
can you make loud noises to scare them? do they make a pig repellent like a bear mase u can use? or find a tree? try your best scarface impression?
whats the best way to avoid any trouble problems when u have a wild pig encounter either while camping, hunting or nature hikeing, thanks!.....tra

Think BBQ wild pork ribs, then quickly get into position for a karate kid KICK. Aim your kick right at his nose when he charge. Then jump on his back and give him the choke headlock......hehe.

Smith & Wesson makes a pig repellant like a bear mace you can use.

It's called the model 29.

Ya know, I always wanted a model 29 pig & bear repeller. Until I saw my first one. Man it was so pretty I immediately KNEW that if I had one it would ATTRACT nuisance pigs and bears who just wanted to look at it and/or fondle it.

So I decided to get a workhorse Ruger instead. Yeah, it ain't as pretty, but I don't have to worry about backwoods looky loo's neither. ;D

Just like any animal, give 'em lots of room, don't threaten the little ones, don't make them feel like they NEED to charge. And never take your eyes off them, even for a second.

At least you didn't suggest making the pigs do the Thai Chili Pepper dance :dancin-red:

Years ago I was hiking in the area behind Big Sur where hogs were first let loose. I came upon a horse that had been gored and died. Later a ranger came to strip off the pack. He asked if I had a weapon. I said no and he gave me the best advice I ever got. He said 'when you see them coming climb up on the biggest rock you can find. They won't follow." Sure enough the next day I bumped a herd of about 7 with piglets. I flew up that rock.

The Chilli Dance is meant for hog hunters wannabee. But it's probably not a bad idea to rub you some chilli and do the dance when eyeball to eyeball with a mean ol boar. The boar may just ROFL at ya......hehe.

Its the little ones that taste the best though. Like piglets in a basket.

Well at least you bought American. I give you that much credit.

Ruger makes great guns.

Their Mini-14s and Mini-30s are the best.

Well it would likely not happen that a pig would come to a populated campsite. You can use bear mace on anything. It is really just regular police pepper spray in a big container! It should work a little on a pig, or it could make it more angry! If you are going to get charged, worst comes to worst make sure you do not let them attack the inside of your leg. It will cause more damage and you have more life theatening ateries and stuff on the inner leg. You are also allowed by law to protect your self in your campsite, so it is ok to have a firearm like a pistol. And if you do have a gun start unloading. Aim for the head not his thick chest!!

Shoot it. Dress is out and call Live 2 hunt or just bring it back to camp. Dont run the other way you may not get another chance to bbq it.

"Well it would likely not happen that a pig would come to a populated campsite. "

I was talking with sonoma army core of engineers the other day about the fall pig hunt and she told me that they have pigs in the campgrounds right now. and that they are a problem. I asked her if I could come help with that problem and she told me in the fall.

A pair of Snake Guards are great for pig hunting too. Odds are your scenario will never happen but if a pig does charger ya, be ready to dance.

Oh and yes, the 329 is nice but the 329PD is butch.

I think the question as a hand to tusk fight with no weapons within arms reach is great. You can think about possibly going in the offense, but from what I gather the most likely scenario is a sow seeing you as a threat to her babies and there's no way she's backing down. Best option has to be, get out of the path/sight of that hog and or retreat to where the weapon is. Hand to tusk I don't see how I could stand a chance, I'm no Sally but I've seen what a big sow can do to a trap with three other pigs in it. Made that box dance. I'll scoot to safety myself

I think in TRA's scenario, the damage would already be done by the time you came about your senses and found your firearm. The question I think he's asking is how to prevent the situation from getting to that point in the first place. Honestly, I'm not sure anyone really has the answer, as is evident from all the Bro-science espoused thus far.

Maybe a better question to ask from which we can all gain some insight is this - has anyone here had a face-to-face confrontation (within 30 yds) with a wild pig and lived to tell the tale, injury free? If so, what did you do?

No don't call me. There is no more room in my freezer. Call Huntr Pat. He can really use the pork and scull.
