I trapped this big boar on Sunday. He is really thick. 4' long and 29" tall. I estimate he weighs in the 250lb range.

It's a suburb of Houston. I've trapped 40+ hogs there this year. I've read this MB off and on for a couple of years. Finally felt like posting something. Most people seem to be in CA ... so I kinda feel like I'm imposing. I'm active on Texas hog hunting forums.

Hey RLL, I'm in Clear Lake, and like you (Katy area) we also have a large urban pig (and deer) population/problem. I drove past a fresh roadkill this morning on my way to work, right at Nasa Road 1 and Space Center Blvd. I've heard of a few guys trapping them down here too. The pigs really put a hurt'n on some of the high priced flower beds a few years ago.

Here is a pic just outside my neighborhood, not far from Bay Area Blvd.

For those that aren't familiar with Houston, lan-lord and I are both in or near the city limits ... yet probably 45 to 50 miles apart. Where he is at in by the Johnson Space Center (NASA).

That trap is 4' tall, 4'wide and 10' long and doesn't break down. And the guillotine gate frame sticks up an additional 4'. So shipping is probably out of the question ... besides I don't build them except for my own use. If you weld, I could email you the plans. Here is a pic of the entire trap.

Having said that, I recently ran across a company that has a collapsible hog trap. It is 3' tall, 4' wide and 8' long. It ships flat in a box (I would guess the box would only be 1' tall and assembles in 10 minutes). I recall it sells for $350. I would guess they could ship it anywhere. I don't think the cost would be too high ... but I really don't know, but I sure they could tell you. If you are interested, I could scrounge around and find their phone number ... and no I don't work for them in any form or fashion. I went by their store once though and liked their traps.

RLL and Lan-Lord,
I am familiar with Katy and the Nasa center in Houston. Katy is where the Bass Pro Shops is located. I have visited that BPP several times and I am familiar with the 1,100???? lb. wild boar picture that is displayed in the BPP men's restroom. Katy is fast becoming urbanized and probably will no longer have a wild boar population in 15-20 yrs. I have visited/toured the NASA Johnson??? Space Center and I am familiar with the Houston area as I land at Houston Hobby airport and I get a rental car and drive down to Thompsons city south on Freeway 59. I believe the exit is Crabcreek??? road and then I drive 7 miles on the farmroads to my friends ranch(before he sold it 2 yrs. ago). That ranch was swarming with wild pigs during the pecan season. He has a pecan orchard in that ranch and he just lets the pecans fall to the ground without harvesting it. The wild pigs are attracted to these pecans on the ground and at that season, he traps a wild pig every night. We shoot those wild pigs at full moon from his treestands. Boy, I have wonderful memories of hog hunting in Houston. Lovely place and the wild pigs are big and have a fresh green grass smell even when you cut the stomach open. God Bless.

Quite contrare. Where I trap is a 12,000 acre federal flood watershed. It is critical to controlling flooding downstream, including downtown. In the past 10 years it has saved billions in potential flood damage. It is a federal wildlife preserve and does not allow hunting (I have a federal permit to trap the hogs). It is thick woods, briars and swamps. It will have hogs for a very long, long time.

Secondly, the hog population in Texas has exploded in the past couple of decades. There are now an estimated 1 to 2 million and growing.

Yeah, it's hard to get on private land. It's word of mouth and reputation and hard to accomplish. It helps to be a local.

As to ranches, no problem. We have plenty of ranches that sell hog hunts. You can google and find lots of them. Most charge starting at $100 a day.
