Did he DRAW all those tags or did he buy some at auctions ? Just wondering because I drew an antelope in '92 and tule elk for next month and my friends consider me very lucky in the draw. To draw ALL big game is astronomical![/b]
Actually, "drawing" the tags necessary for the Catagory E slam (9 species, 7 of which quality for the CBH book) isn't that hard...

1) Mule deer - OTC tags available
2) Columbia Blacktail deer - OTC tags available
3) Pacific Hybrid deer - OTC tags available
4) Black bear - OTC tags available
5) Pronghorn Antelope - hard draw
6) Bighorn sheep - VERY hard draw
7) American elk - (are there any American Elk herds open to hunting in CA?)
8) Roosevelt elk - hard draw
9) Tule elk - medium-hard to hard draw
10) Mainland hog - OTC tags available
11) Turkey (all species) - no tag required
12) Coyote - no tag required
13) Bobcat - OTC tags available

In theory, you could get the Catagory E slam with just luck, time, hard work, and drawing one tag (and conecting) on one of the draw specieis (elk, antelope, or sheep).

I'm not trying to diminish the achievment, just saying it doesn't have much to do with draw odds, but that is has everything to do with passion.

One doesn't have to go far to score a bobcat approx 2 weeks ago I came home and noticed something on the lawn at the rear of our home it was a bobcat taking an afternoon snooze.

Sick and gives a bad name to hunters>>>>Wrong message to our hunting youth!

Number 1 - I know you have the facts incorrect. You see, I was there! All I know is everyone swarmed the Tenamaha Area and these guys were part of them. Who made this guy the official Tenamaha hunter anyway.
Sure I checked it out, just like everyone, but I went where everyone else was not. I and MY CRONIES were not even hunting the Temnmaha area. Who gave old tree, these guys any exclusive hunting rights to any area. Just because you told him where to hunt, because you were there the year before, also does not provide exclusive hunting rights.

The sick and twisted part of it all is that these guys took the Elk hide and the testicles and hung them on the barb wire fence on a road, Steward Road, a drivable road to the general public. I don't care what you think the purpose of this was!.... its sick!, twisted!, bizarre!, whatever you want to call it. It's wrong!, and shows no respect for the Elk or any animal. It gives hunters a bad name. Does he own this fence? I don't think so. Does he live there??? even if you did... it's a bad call....

Have some pride as a hunter trying to preserve hunting rights that we all fight for and hopefully pass down to other generations. This definitely sends the wrong message to our hunting youth!!!

Oatman, I should stay out of this but since you seem to be talking to me, I'll respond. Please tell me what facts I have incorrect. You haven't called me on anything! The Timemaha area is open to everyone, right? You wrote that you opted to hunt elsewhere because everyone (4 other hunters and their friends) swarmed there. So what was the problem? I don't think Old Tree had exclusive rights because the other hunters hunted there too. I made the comment about the other hunters and their chronies screwing Old Tree up, simply to report that Old Tree had to keep at it and work harder to be successful. If you have hunted before, I'm sure another hunter has spoiled a stalk or blown some animals out on you. It happens. I never said it was intentional I was just saying his hunt was probably extended because of it. I should have left out the word "chronies" though!

Let me tell you from experience, most of the conflicts, especially opening morning conflicts, could be worked out if the DFG had one orientation where all five hunters could talk about their stategies and work out the potential conflicts, before the sun came up on opening morning. I heard they used to do it that way. It's a shame that a guy puts in a ton of work to pattern an animal and to have some guy drive up on opening morning and screw things up. It happened to me. It doesn't have to be that way. This is not a remote area. You could get an elk in a wheelchair if you are in the right place at the right time.

As far as someone hanging the hide and testicles on a fence for everyone to see. I wasn't there so I don't know. It sure sounds like you are accusing Old Tree of doing this. Did you or anyone else see him do this? Are you sure it was his elk hide? I do know one thing. I'll vouch for Old Trees character (20 years). He would never do anything to disrespect an animal or give a hunter a bad name. I've all ready typed about Old Trees bowhunting accomplishment and I'll tell everyone that he has done more for the preservation of this sport than most of us combined. My

I bet your talking about a cowhide hanging over the fence. That one rancher near Tinnemaha has about a dozen hanging on his fence. Right on Ed, DFG needs to do this or at least put a contact list with the phone numbers of other hunters so they can work things out before the hunt.

Forums can, be very useful.
I appreciate your comments in response to mine.
I was informed by DFG that only one elk was taken by Friday the 18th and it was on Steward Road. Your post was on the 17th. I can only conclude what seems to be, that this is Old Tree's hide. Did I see him hang the items in question? no! If I am incorrect I apologize and still make a point.
It should not have happened!
And all should take care of the dressings of any animal especially in this type of area. Yes, it was an Elk Hide and when only one was reported...... you make the conclusion...and you can work this out with old tree.
Yes, you said 4 other hunters. If I am not there,,,, it's only three other hunters... that's why your post is incorrect, and since you posted the info I can only respond to you.
We all should do the right thing! Try to work together in a situation like this and take some Bulls....
As for hunters coordinating together, the warden I talked too, made specific reference that the hunters in the Big Pine Tenamaha area should work together to take these animals. Yes this is an awesome place to take Elk, I had many in my face!
The point I am trying to make is ("Cronies") which got my goad and I think was an apology from you, (appreciated), second hand info possibly should be keep to oneself...
The Elk you took last year is AWESOME and congratulations. I know much about it...how you took it and where.
I do not frequent this sight, although I have been registered for many years. I was informed of your comments by others and had to respond.

I had the hunt of a lifetime,,,Good hunting to all and lets keep it clean, and our heads held up.

Oatman, Thanks for clearing some of this up. I'll give you some more info. Old Tree did not take his elk off Steward Rd and there was another elk taken, a 7x8, in the area you describe. Was it Old Trees hide on the fence, I didn't ask him but at this point I doubt it. I understand your conclusion was made by what you saw and heard from the DFG at that point. But, pointing fingers, especially on the www might cause some problems. One more thing, When I referred to 4 other hunters, I was correct. If there are five hunters and you hunted somewhere else, that leaves 4 other hunters (including Old Tree). And it was an apology for using the word "chronies". Thanks for the compliment on my elk. Enough said. Good hunting.

Thanks Wingbone.

Sierrafool, The cow hides are farther north. Stay out of this!! How did your hunt turn out. Some guys were worried about you. I wasn't. Ed F

Well, I got back yesterday from going back up to Bishop to pick up my elk meat. I took my wife and showed her the sights and several of the elk herds. We had a great trip.
What a disappointment to get back home and log into this site (I haven't been in since I think the 19th or so) and see such low and malicious comments from someone.
Thanks, Bowunter, for attempting to keep some sanity here.
I wasn't going to respond to this at all, but it's kept gnawing at me all day.
As a rule I don't participate in sites like this,,,just for these types of issues. My good friend Bowunter-Ed F. talked me into sharing and said that there were lots of great guys out there that like to share, etc. and it sure seemed that way till Oatman decided to make some "conclusions" based on whatever information he could scrounge up.
Here are some real facts for any of you sitting on the fence,,,,,since "I was there" too.
~Did I have or expect "exclusive" rights to anything?? NO. What a ridiculous comment. I've been doing this a long time. That's why I scouted the various areas 5 of the 6 weekends prior to the season. And I expected just exactly what was happening might be a problem for me to be successful. So I made adjustments.
~Starting with the day before the season and then each morning and evening there were people trying to drive up on the bulls when they were bedded west of the fields or when they were trying to leave the fields in the AM to go back there to bed. I know this because I could see from the blind I hiked to at 3:30 each morning. My spotting crew hiked up to their vantage point each day also and knows who was doing what. Maybe not all of these "drivers" were hunters or with the hunters.
~On day 4 all the Tinemana elk were over near the SW corner late in the morning. I had crawled to within 100 yards of the drop tine bull when the guy that adjusts the sprinklers rode over on his bike and herded all the animal back thru the trees into a corner. Obviously I was done.
~I mention the above because on day 5 the elk obviously had had enough motorized harrassment. There were no elk in the normal fields. We headed north to go check the Bishop herd and enroute noticed elk up in the lower lava NW of N Fish Springs. I got dropped off up the hwy and started back towards them. I'll share with any hunters that are still reading this and haven't gotten ill and left that that I made one of the greatest stalks of my career into over 100 animals. But this post isn't intended to be a sharing of my hunt. I'll just say I got my bull. 100% fair chase.
~I have 4 witnesses (5 counting me since numbers seem to be an issue) that know where it was, and it's several miles away from the "hide on the fence" crime scene (not my hide) One of my 4 witnesses was the N. Inyo area Game Warden. He talked with my brother (who is also an LE officer) for awhile while I sat on the lava hill a half mile away above my bull giving him plenty of time to stay down.
~We delivered my bull to the locker in Bishop around 4:00 pm on the 16th. There was 1 other elk there that we were told was taken off Steward Rd. that morning.
~Almost done,,,,,,thanks for your patience. 2 items to go.
(1) I'm embarassed for the person that started this,,,,,to throw "crap" on me and then do a final post that "we should keep it clean and hold our heads up". Pretty sad deal.
(2) I hope all you guys are out hunting(or will be soon) and having a great time,,,I just needed to get this off my chest.
Thanks,,,,,Dave S.

OLDTREE, why get your camo panties all in a bunch, it sounds like OATMAN got skunked and is looking for an excuse.

As a rule I don't participate in sites like this,,,just for these types of issues.

My friend it's every where, not just here on JHO, it's called envy and it comes out every time someone is tested [ I do like him trying to camo his slander by saying [Good hunting to all and lets keep it clean, and our heads held up. ] wow!!! I almost took the bate.

I don't think OATMAN is a bad person, maybe upset, hurt or something, but trying to camo his statements with, Sick and gives a bad name to hunters>>>>Wrong message to our hunting youth!
Dear sir, didn't you learn in kindergarten that GOSSIP IS BAD and saying things that are not true makes you a LIAR.

I sir expect you to give OLD TREE a 100% apology and ask for his forgiveness, after all you are a bowhunter and I expect better from you.

OLDTREE, did you get your camo panties pulled out yet!, you and I both know that your a strait arrow and if this is the first time you have had any gossip you live a charmed life.

Now that your all com-downed let's see some pic's and a story.

P.S you are a part of the hunting community and I expect to hear from you here on JHO because this is really all about hunting.
