"know the difference between hunting hard and a canned hunt"

I have no issues with anyone hunting on this ranch, but Fowlshooter please
explain to me what part of this hunting operation isn't canned?

Well I have kids and they have been hunting with me since they could walk.We always hunt public land I have only paid to hunt once at choppers (and it was worth every penny going back in June)My kids have been dragged through the woods and have seen sucess and most often just a nice day in the woods. They love it but my son cant get a lisence yet and would crap him self if once I was tagging along and he was doing the hunting.Even if it is a canned hunt hes only 10 finding an animal and making his first stock would be something he will remember the rest of his life.He already knows that we come home empty handed most of the time but this would be HIS hunting trip and if he shoots and misses, well thats the way it goes for us most of the time

but if he connects even better.

A canned hunt and a barnyard pig. There are guides that have access to ranches where they can almost drive up to wild hogs and get persons with physical limitations within rifle shot of those hogs. With a disabled hunter lic Stryders cousin could have had a real hunting experience that fit within his physical limitations. The cost is a bit more and this is just my opinion.

Keep in mind, disable people like Stryder's friend does NOT have a hunting license.

Congrats to your friend Stryder.

It's still good to have these operations available for people that are still too young to obtain a license or not able to obtain a license but are capable of doing a hunt. I wouldn't go there to hunt myself but I would like to take my 9 years old one of these days.

I didn\'t say it wasn\'t \"canned\", I just said I know the difference and I didn\'t see anything wrong with hunting a wild pig there (especially if they are \"Razorback\" or wild). I haven\'t been there yet so I really can\'t comment on the fair chase aspect but it\'s close to home and I need to kill a boar. Soon! Lol

Agreed...that is an awesome thing to do for your cousin. It's too bad too many people here have interjected their opinions (many without reading your entire post).
If you wanted to rain on his parade or state your opinion about the type of operation...start different thread. This one wasn't started to hear your opinion of the operation. It was to tell a good story about doing the right thing.
Congrats again to you and your cousin!

we came across this porker, put a sneak on him and he center punched him at about 40 yds with my mini 14. 200 lbs or so of nice tasty pig and some GREAT memories. IMHO it just doesn't get any better than that. Dennis[/b]

Aloha Dennis, Congrat to your cousin, and kudos to you for taking him, looks like alot of good eating ahead. Just one question, what load were you using in your Mini-14, how many rounds did it take, and how did the bullets perform? Any exit wounds? When I had my Mini-14 I reloaded Barnes 70 grain SPs and they did a nice job on pigs all one shot kills. I have a new Handi Rifle in 223 that i'm working up loads for though this will be reserved more for our small wild mountain goats then pigs though wouldn't hesitate if the shot was good. Thanks!

My thoughts exactly !!!! We have beat this topic (BHC and other canned hunts) to death here. Then resurected it and beaten it again. And again. Taking an able bodied child hunting and this situation are drastically different.

Congrats to you and your cousin. Thanks for sharing the story. I hope you and he have memories to enjoy for the rest of his your lives. I hope you get back there for another pig for the freezer and the time spent with each other

My sentiments exactly...........meaning a job well done for you Stryder for taking the time to take out your disabled cousin(his cousin's disability prevent him from taking a hunters safety course and getting a hunting license, just for information to those who have not read the beginning of Stryder's post). It is very commendable for you to take out your cousin and had some fun and memories together. Congratulations. God Bless.

Aloha back Uncle Ji! I used a load from black hills that I found at the local gun store. It was 40-50 yd broadside shot a couple inches behind the shoulder, busted a rib going in, destroyed the lungs and took out two ribs going out. It was the only shot needed, the other was insurance just to make sure he didn't get into the brush. Here's the link to the bullets I used http://www.bosesguns.com/product_p/bhm223r2.htm

On a side note I just wanted to say that I really enjoy seeing your pics from Hawaii. I've spent a couple days prowling the jungles over there chasing pigs with knives when I was younger, I ended up climbing a few trees to. That was on Oahu and hutning with a cousin of mine. I've another cousin on the Hilo side of the big island that keeps bugging me to come over for a trip. I've gotta find the time and money to do it soon.

Aloha Dennis, thanks for the info on 223 ammo used, i'm always impressed at what a good 223 load will do in competant hands. You HAVE TO go on a Big Island pig hunt, nothing compares. I used to live in Kealakekua back in the early 80s and we'd drive all the way to Laupahoehoe Forest just Northwest of Hilo to hunt pigs because they were so plentiful, healthy, and tasty feeding mostly on the banana poka fruit. No dogs allowed but did not need them as pigs were EVERYWHERE. You have to try it at least once, you won't regret it.

On a side note I had a good buddie in High School that had Down's Syndrome, he always came to my football and Wrestling comps, and even held himself back an extra year to graduate with me, I don't remember how we became buddies but he had the best outlook on life, and was the kind of person you wish you could be, though he had severe issues with even the easiest every day challenge.

He and I always chatted about fishing together thru snail mail while I ws deployed, and even spoke about hunting hogs together when I would write him from wherever the Navy had me, his aunt would write for him, well the last time I got sent to the land o sand I got a letter that Rob passed away, just after high school he had complete kidney failure and underwent daily treatment, he eventually got a kidney replacement, they found a distant relative that was a match since he wasn't eligible from the standard means because of his down's, anyway I always wish I had been able to hunt and or fish with him.

again good on you for taking time out to treat your cuz to the outdoors, also good luck pursuing the handicap license for him, I would hope that there are opportunities for hunting outside elsewhere.

Stryder, you're a solid family type in my book, Hoss'....your cuz' is lucky to have you gettin' him out n' about! And that's what it's really all about....just gettin' out and enjoyin' the time together! If you get a little game in the process...well, that's just the icing man! Keep doin' it and you'll be buildin' a lifetime o' memories....for the both of ya'

And Bearclaw...."I gaurantee I'll Kill Two Weeks"....man, you crack me up Son! :) That partner o' yours from High School? He appreciated more than you'll probably ever know just hangin' with you and pipedreamin' about those fishing and hunting trips, that were always on the horizon! Sometimes those are the best ones, because you can imagine them any way you want them to be!!! Any time you spend a little of "Your" time with somebody else, you leave a little of you with'em!

Stryder, lookin' forward to seein' you at Tejon in May!
