Here's a couple of pics of my cousin and I and a pig that he shot over at Bighorn Canyon. I know that BHC gets a bad rap but it does serve a purpose, perhaps a new hunter just looking to get an animal, perhaps someone who doesn't care about walking 5 miles and still not shooting something, or in the case of my cousin someone who has no chance of hunting like the rest of us can and do.
You see my cousin is 23, he was born with a hole in his heart, wasn't supposed to live much past 1, then2 then 5, he's had 5 closed chest heart surgeries, 4 open chest heart surgeries, has spinal bifida, is dyslexic, can't read so therefore can't get a hunting license/drivers license, etc... anyways we went there march of '05 on an extremely windy day and after 3 hrs of seeing nothing at all we came across this porker, put a sneak on him and he center punched him at about 40 yds with my mini 14. 200 lbs or so of nice tasty pig and some GREAT memories. IMHO it just doesn't get any better than that. Dennis

Man I just love seeing dead pigs. Way to go guys. Looks like he has some size to him. How did he taste? Good I hope. Times huntin' with firends and people you care about are the best.

Maybe you guys can try and make it an annual event.

Orso I plan on taking him back there this summer/fall and we'll use my ground blind this time. He doesn't get around so well.

Hey thanks Mulie, I try my best.

Cal, no catch except that it's actually gone up to $50 they just haven't updated their site lately. It isn't a problem getting an animal out there though. If I had a kid to young to hunt I'd take him there in a heartbeat, I wish my dad would have.

And it tasted VERY good, made for some great kalua pig. My buddy just got a russian out there and I made about 50 lbs of hot & cajun sausage and tonight he said it was the best he's ever had so their piggies are tasty.

It's true Cal Hunter. If you dont take an animal you pay the $25 bucks. Take your son, he will get a kick out of it.

Nope, you being a non hunter will not have to pay anything. If you go after a russian I would recommend carrying a handgun as they can be pretty nasty, they also had razorback from arkansas last time I was there that chewed up a couple of their dogs and knocked a guy down and tore up his calf pretty good. I carried my glock just for insurance.

Great post Dennis. You are right on the money.

To much is made of right and wrong ways of hunting.

It is up to everyone to choose their leve.

Dennis, What are you planning for hunts this fall?

Probably be in Wyoming for antelope, putting in for coues in AZ and going to tejon in may. I have no vacation time so there's not a whole lot I can do, unfortunately. I'd like to get out your way and get an elk sometime. How does the draw work over there? Any cow tags OTC/leftover?

Great post, Stryder!

I'm with Paulc here too... sometimes we spend too much time judging how someone else hunts without regards to the fact that, at least they're hunting.

Man what a picture!!!!! is that a southern california backdrop with snow and all!!! Great story ...hey dont forget that your cousin qualifies for a disabled hunters lic. My friend has M.S. and he can shoot from the road as long as he calls the local game warden to let him know youll be shootin around. A legal hunter must be with to retrieve or finish off whatever game was shot. Keep hunting and good luck. Man what picture!!!

Stryder,
That is awesome. BHC is a perfect place for someone like your cousin.

For those of you taking your children there, that is fine if you see fit. Don't flame me but I am going to take the opposite position. I do not have kids yet, but I personally would not take my son or daughter there to introduce them to "hunting," because to me it is not hunting.

I do think that it is important to get kids on game to keep them interested, but there is a right and wrong way (at least for me) to do it. The part that is missing with places like BHC is respect for the hunt itself, not to mention respect for the animal's life. When I take my first child hunting I will be sure to instill in him/her the principles of fair chase. I will make sure that they understand that only wild animals are to be hunted. I will tell them that wild animals deserve to be free, and not confined behind fences. I will impress upon them the importance of wild places and how fortunate we are to be able to hunt freely. I will teach them to care for the land and to hold Mother Nature in the highest regard. I will introduce them to the joys of a campfire, a warm sleeping bag, an orange sunset, the howl of a coyote or the hoot of an owl, or just the surreal silence of the backcountry. I will do my best to teach them about those who have gone before us, the values that they held dear and the works they performed to preserve the sanctity of the hunt. I will show them that it is not just about taking an animal, but about the pleasure of being one with the wild side of nature. And if they are lucky enough to kill an animal, they will have truly earned it. And, they will have done so in a dignified manner that honors that animal's life. Finally, I will teach them the proper, and respectful way to care for the animal and consume it.

It seems to me that points like these seem to get lost when "hunting" at places like BHC. It is all about the kill for too many people and that is why places like this exist.

For those of you who believe it is important to get new hunters on game to hold their interest, I agree with you. But for just a few dollars more, I could take my kid on a guided pig hunt up North. The extra expense is worth it. There we would have plenty of opportunity to see lots of pigs, and we would be hunting truly wild animals. I could show my child how to respect a real hunt and feel good about it. We would also get to see beautiful ranches, rich in wildlife. I would get to show my son or daughter how wondrous the wild can be. It is hard to do this when you are looking down over the 60 freeway and Moreno Valley. For those who say they don't have the time and BHC is so close, B.S.! Personally, I'd take the time, my kid and Mother Nature are worth it.

Lastly, it will be important for me to introduce my kids to the principles of hard work and the reward that comes from such efforts. I think it would be hard to do that when you pretty much walk right up on the animal in a relatively small enclosure. I want to be able to introduce my kid to the feeling of self accomplishment that stems from taking an animal after he/she worked all day, or several days, to make a clean kill. IMO, there is no better way to build a child's self esteem. I feel that the taking of an animal is something that should be earned, and I intend to show my kids how to earn it. For me, game farms are not where I would choose to introduce my child to hunting because nothing is earned. There is just far too much that is left out, or disregarded.

Again, this is just how I would do it. I don't judge those who think BHC is great. I just have a different perspective.

Donning flame retardant jock strap right now.

first impressions are very important when it comes to young children, it effects them for the rest of their life , good or bad. so it is important the decision you make for your child and their future in hunting.
just food for thought..........tra

Hello all,

I’m new to So Cal and currently attending Chapman University School of Law so my hunting is limited to local areas. I looked into BHR and it’s relatively close to Anaheim (my current residence). If they have wild boar there and they only charge $300, I’m in!

I’ve been hunting since I was 12 years old (I’m now 23) and know the difference between hunting hard and a canned hunt. I don’t see anything wrong with this place. I would feel much less a hunter paying a guide to run his dogs, only to walk up and dispatch the animal at close range. In my book that would be a joke but I wouldn’t try to tell someone that it’s wrong just because I feel it is.

I wish I had the time to figure this area out and get some public hog hunting in, but time is limited working and going to school full time. I hope you don’t think I’m any less a hunter for going to BHR. I’ll post some pics.
