Dog saves cat from blaze
Published: December 5, 2006
Robert Gardner’s growing family has a hero in its midst.

Casey, a rambunctious 2-year-old black Labrador retriever, is being credited with saving the family’s pampered — and temperamental — calico cat from a fire that ripped through their Palo Cedro home Friday night.

“He’s a pretty amazing dog, I tell you,” Gardner, 33, said Monday. [Dogs Are Smarter Than Jack: 91 Amazing True Dog Stories]

In fact, he said, firefighters who battled the blaze have urged him to change Casey’s name to better reflect his bravery and hero status.

“He (Casey) should come and hang out at the fire station,” said Brandon Lanning, a California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection firefighter. “He definitely had it in him.”

The fire, which caused an estimated $100,000 damage to the Hillside Drive home, broke out at around 6:30 p.m. It may have been caused by an electrical problem, Lanning said.

The family had left only a short time earlier to attend the Christmas tree-lighting ceremony at The Mall in downtown Redding, said Gardner, a warehouse assistant at Frozen Gourmet.

Casey, whose paws were muddy from digging in the dirt, had been left in the backyard because new carpeting had been installed inside the ranch-style house, said Gardner.

But Cindy, the family’s fat and elderly cat, was left inside.

Gardner and his family returned to the home about 7:30 p.m. while firefighters were still battling the fire. Firefighters recounted to him Casey’s amazing behavior.

When firefighters broke down the door, Gardner said, Casey bolted in with them and ran through the house as if searching for something.

“I’m not sure why, but I think he went to look for us,” said Gardner. “He wanted to make sure we weren’t in the house.”

Or perhaps, Gardner said, Casey was looking for the frightened Cindy, who quickly emerged from her hiding spot and gingerly followed him outside the residence to safety.

“Casey may have stirred her up, and she followed him out,” he said.

Of all the family members, Gardner said, Cindy likes Casey the best.

“They don’t play together, but they do sleep and eat together,” he said.

Lanning, who was the first firefighter to enter the house, said Casey was definitely on a mission.

“He wanted to assist us, I guess,” he said, adding that he also thinks Casey was looking for his family or his pet pal. “It was pretty interesting.”

Lanning said that Casey returned to the house after Cindy the cat was outside and that he stayed close to firefighters battling the blaze.

“He was literally right next to me and my crew,” he said, adding that the firefighters quickly took Casey back outside.

“The fire was getting pretty hot by then,” he said.

No one was hurt in the fire.

Since the blaze, Gardner and his family, including, his pregnant 21-year-old wife, Chyla, have been staying in a Redding motel.

But, Gardner said, the family may be returning to the home site in a recreational vehicle provided to him by his boss and his wife while the house is rebuilt.

Despite the fire, Gardner and his family, which includes Curtis, 14, Austin, 13, and Faith, 9, are keeping a positive attitude and they won’t let it ruin their Christmas holiday.

“It’s just a bump in the road,” he said, adding that the community has shown his family a great deal of kindness and support, which he appreciates.

An account has been established at the Washington Mutual Bank on Dana Drive in Redding for those who would like to help the family, including hero Casey.
