Well, I got a late start around 12:30pm at FHL and I went to a place where I had seen pigs on three separate occasions. I hunkered down and stayed in one spot since the ground was so dry that if I were to move over dry grass and leaves the piggies would hear me a mile away. After 7 hours I saw a sow with three piglets run by, but I was not in a proper position to get an accurate shot off at them as I would have to use my left hand and if I shifted my body they would have heard it with all the leaves rustling. So I waited till they went up the other hill to see if I could get a shot off but they had disappeared int the brush. One minute after the sow there came a decent sized boar except this time I was ready. He was running about 65 yards down my hill. I fired one shot from my mini-14 223 (barnes solid copper 55gr) and he dropped like a rock and then expired. It turns out I had hit him in the spinal cord and that was all that was needed. I gutted him on the spot and drove my vehicle up the hill and picked him up and went home to finish cleaning him.

I have been hunting FHL for about a year and this was my first public pig taken. Pics below. :panic:

I shot a pig at FHL on Saturday as well.

Isn't it unbelievable how you can be watching for hours and then suddenly they are just gliding by like ghosts? I'm just amazed at how such a big brutish animal can move so silently and swifty. I've heard bigger groups squealing and grunting before I've seen them, but the small little groups and singles move through the forest like a shadow.

Anyhow - nice pig, congratulations!

Just dropped it off at the butcher and his hanging weight was 100 lbs so I would guess he was around 175 lbs live weight.

Hehe thanks! I actually missed 2 piggies on public land who were running with my new bolt-action 308 hunting rifle with scope, the last one being in the exact area I shot the boar. I got fed up with the rifle and switched back to Ole Faithful and sure enough, she delivered again!

Guts usually are around 35% of live weight so that would put your hog around 135lbs. That is if he was hung up after field dressing.

Fantastic story, great job. That is a true trophy and will be great eating. 100 pounds hanging without the hide and head, guts, lower legs is a 150#-175# pig without a doubt. Congrats!!

Yeah, he was 100 lbs hanging completely cleaned (skinned, gutted, headless, and legless) like you said, I would put that somewhere between 150-175 lbs.

Congrats bro. You have certainly put in the work for that pig.

Thanks!
