Do you guys normally hunt in tactical gear and assault rifles? Just asking?

That is the oddest question. What does that have to do with any of this and what makes it "Tactical Gear." If they are wearing it for hunting it's not "Tactical." He is a former Marine so it's obvious he prefers to use gear he has on hand and the digital MARPAT is great camouflage. Sorry for the flame but it just seems like you are trying to drag this in the wrong direction here and it give me the sense that you are flaming him a little. If I'm wrong then you have my apology.

Thanks guys for informing the individual questioning the attire and rifle. BTW, I was squirrel and rabbit hunting with my son. That "assault rifle" was a MP 15-22. Its a .22 caliber rifle. Looks are not always what they seem. But if it was a different caliber, and if it was a legally owned assault rifle, and it was all I had, then so what if I hunted with it? Besides thanks for ignoring the message that some nut almost had a teenage boy as a victim to their boobytraps (sarcastic thumbs up).

"Horse" - I see that you reported having an unpleasant confrontation about a year ago, with a woman whom owns land up off Eagle Peak. She had tried to intimidate you into staying off of the public lands adjacent to her property.

Just curious...were these booby traps anywhere near the place where you had that confrontation last year?

Shocking! My son and I found hidden booby traps on a public foot path in the Cleveland National Forest while hunting today.

My son almost got his foot impaled by one. We couldn't leave those things out there for someone else to get hurt. We cleared about 1/4 mile of the path and found several of these improvised booby traps!

Anti-hunting nut or sadistic criminal?

Thank you for reading this post 8steeltown! Stuff like this needs attention for safety reasons. To answer TurkeysGalore, no this was in Palomar District on Eagle Peak. The landowner (great memory BTW!) was in the Descanso District off of Boulder Creek. Aught-Sixguy- always frosty bro... lol!

I for one see it as a valid question. Not that you care one bit, either do I.... But, you are portraying an image of warfare in the woods. Don't chastise the fellow for asking a simple question. Honestly, I would be confused if I came upon someone in the woods in that attire. A simple explanation was needed not a rush to defense.

Total of 6 poachers. 2 guys didnt have tags or a license. another pair shot a doe with a D16 tag and thought it was cool. And 2 other guys crossed over onto private property (2 fences they had to hop) and shot a barely legal buck. Eagle peak road is attracting more and more idiots by the minute.

I asked that question to get folks thinking. Whenever anyone of us goes into the field to hunt we are representing all other hunters. In this day with there being so many anti-gun and anti-hunters out there we need to be cognizant and aware of the image we are projecting. This is especially true in areas close to urban centers, which is all of Southern CA and parts of Northern CA.

Going "hunting" dressed like you're a Navy seal and carrying an assault-like rifle does nothing to help with this situation.

@ Boaring - I agree image and perception is reality in most cases (whether the perception is true to the situation or not). Additionally, those of the population that are not involved in certain groups would not know what is "acceptable or the norm" or not (for example, I have no idea anything about the surfing community and their customs and courtesies or the proper equipment they use).

I think what gives hunters and hunting a negative stigma is the actions of those few "bad hunters" (such as poaching, trespassing onto private property, trashing the areas and etc as mike_cook82 stated). I think that is what needs to be policed by our own if anything else!

The failing to report or "turning a blind eye" illegal action is just as wrong as committing it. I do believe everyone thinks all hunters dress like "trees" and tote around guns and love to kill defenseless animals for joy (other than the majority of hunters of course). I think the sensitivity of assault weapons (heck, they are even trying to ban the rifles we use now) is the flavor of the month.

I totally get what your are trying to do as you stated as to spawn thinking. FYI, I had some kids drive up to my boy and I and ask me where Cedar Creek Falls was while projecting that image. Of course I helped them because it is the right thing to do and hopefully they will not look at every "walking tree with gun" in a negative way.

@69ChrisCraft - I am not trying to portray any type of warfare anywhere. But apparently, I have to be cognizant of my surroundings and be watchful for booby-traps that can cause serious injury. If this person(s) is willing to hurt others, who is going to make it easy for them? Not me.

I'll be honest. I do feel those traps were made to prevent or dissuade others from the area. The intention behind why the traps were placed is unknown and I will not speculate. That is just how I feel based on my own experiences. It made my wife worried about me hunting. It spooked my son about being hurt hunting (and me too). But it is a principle issue for me. My personal process is that I will not give in to any type of terrorism. If I stop going, they win. They get what they want. I will not let that happen. But at the same time, I will not fall victim to them either. And who knows how far they are willing to go at any given time. But that is just me and speaking from my own training and experiences.

I guess you have to have your child or yourself almost fall victim to it to feel what I feel. I respect your perspective. Just be safe out there. That is my intended message from the beginning. Be careful because those threats are real and are out there. I might not be waging war, but someone(s) is and unfortunately my son and I got involved unwillingly.... food for thought.

You may no nothing about surfing, but I doubt you would feel threatened if 2 guys came walking down the beach you were standing on with 9 foot longboards. Even though you don't surf or know anything about their customs or courtesies, you would likely recognize these guys as going or coming from surfing.

Spin that around to a media-fueled over-awareness of gun violence at the hands of crazies with assault weapons and 95% of people in urban So Cal would be freaked out if someone was walking down a trail dressed like a Navy seal with an assault-like weapon. To be honest if I was hunting and passed a person like that I would be a little freaked out too...even if I had a gun.

In regards to your comment about, "I think what gives hunters and hunting a negative stigma is the actions of those few "bad hunters." Yes, that is true, but only partial IMO. In my group of friends 75% of them are liberal democrats, but 99% of them are pro hunting and truly appreciate my hard work and effort to bring them antelope sausage or elk steaks. They would never want to see my hunting privileges taken away. But, they'd be at the front of the line to outlaw assault weapons. Unfortunately the distance between them being pro hunting and anti assault weapon is too close IMO. I do my best to show them they are very different and opposing topics. Going hunting dressed like a Navy seal with an assault-like weapon brings both of those things together and I feels muddies the water a bit.

As for the booby traps...I've seen stuff like that too a few times. Each time was in So Cal when I lived there and both times the nails were placed where vehicles were accessing or trespassing on private property. I'm betting this is a similar situation, but it would still make for a bad day for anyone, hunter or non-hunter, to step on one of them.

The topic is about the Booby Traps that my son and I found in Cleveland National Forest. A Public Safety Announcement and nothing more. If you want, we can go to another area in the forum and discuss pre-assaultive ques, use of force issues, case law pertaining to use of force and tactics and what ever else. But let's agree not in this thread to keep it on topic. Thanks!
