I just saw this post today ... very informative. I think I need to visit the California forum more often. I have been hunting this area the past week (not this exact trail) and have not seen any of these so far but I will keep my eyes peeled from now on. Makes your blood boil!

Either way, who ever planted those punji-type booby traps almost got a 17 year-old boy impaled with a rusty nail. Just like a stray bullet has no name, so did those. Actions have consequences. I am going to say, who ever installed those devices probably don't care who they hurt. In my opinion, they are just as bad or worse of who they are "fighting" against. No excuse!

+1 - well said.

I asked that question to get folks thinking. Whenever anyone of us goes into the field to hunt we are representing all other hunters. In this day with there being so many anti-gun and anti-hunters out there we need to be cognizant and aware of the image we are projecting. This is especially true in areas close to urban centers, which is all of Southern CA and parts of Northern CA.

Going "hunting" dressed like you're a Navy seal and carrying an assault-like rifle does nothing to help with this situation.

Well. I have to take some issue with this comment- AR pattern sporting arms for todays military vets, and retired are like what M1s were for vets coming back from WW2 who used them for hunting...an efficient tool, and people are getting more used to them as time goes on.

If I went to Cabelas and bought matching RealTree pattern everything would that make me tacticool?
How about if I wore old USMC marpats top, and jeans? Or Digicam desert and Carharts pants?
Orange ball cap ok?

I think the point is to blend in, and I for one find milsurp clothing to be very durable and effective in the field, and cost effective as I put a lot of wear and tear on them, just flailing around as I do thru the bushes...

On the other hand, I did ask a Border Patrol guy once, while driving around scouting for pig sign, if he saw any, and tho he wasnt a hunter, he was helpful, and when I asked his opinion about open carry sidearm in places like the Hauser Wildnerness south of I-8, which in Pine Creek looks like the superhighway for human trafficking these days, based on the sign, kinda like back side of Palomar, with all the grows...it makes sense to be uh, prepared...if I was just carrying the bolt action hunting gun.

He said unsolicited it was "real bad guy country at night down there, and if he came on my suddenly, late in the day, and I was all tactical looking, he'd be just as likely to draw down on me, just to be careful...
I didnt take it personally at all- and a fair reflection of how "dress to impress" can work both ways...:hog chewing:
