I have always used a regular pack and carried my bow. Has anybody found a good backpack with a good release or a sling that is effective for spot and stalk?
I strap mine to my pack until I hit the "zone" where I anticipate a shooting opp...from that point on i want my bow in hand. I have several Elerlestock & Sitka Gear packs, all designed to hold a bow except for my hip packs.
I use the blacks creek 3:16 lumbar pack. It is lite and small. It has straps and a boot for holding a bow while you are hiking. It holds everything I need for a day hunt.
I like how versatile my Tailhook is but i still want my bow in hand if there's game nearby. The action can be fast and furious when you're a dedicated ground pounder.
Thanks Bruce. I am also a ground hunter but the ground is rarely flat and open. Thats why i am searching for a way to have my hands free and my bow quickly and quietly available.
I have a Badlands 2200. What we do is, My buddy and I switch bows in the morning and I put mine on his pack and he put mine on his. That way if a quick shot situation comes up the boom you un-clip off of you buddies backpack and your ready to go. It dose help that we have the same packs.
If you hike a lot and want to be ready this is perfect. You can also use it to strap bow to your back. Some people say it smells like rubber, but I smell like hunter so I play the wind anyway and rubber does not scare as much as hunter in my opinion. Can walk with an arrow nocked and it takes a bunch of weight off. Just have to set it up so at full draw you have no tension.
This is the sling I use. Its difficult to use in conjunction to a pack. I wear my pack and sling together until I'm in my area then dump the pack. The sling has tabs at the cam pockets wich assist getting the bow out quickly. Its conveniant at times on long hikes and annoying at opportune moments. For the money its worth it. Just use discretion.
