Say you are looking at a hunt with 5 tags. 4 go to the point pool and 1 goes to the random pool. Obviously all 4 of the ones in the point pool will go to max point holders, that I completely understand. But what if you have say 3 points. Does that help you at all for the random drawing? So does having less than max points even benefit you at all over someone who has no points?

It's my understang that having less than max does no good at all. Unless the highest point applicants are less than max and in your point group.
It's not like AZ.

Unless I totally misread it (and that's possible), points have no bearing on the random selection. So someone's four points put him right there with the guy who has no points.

This state is the most confusing......I went to the local DFG office yesterday and the ladies behind the counter could not answer this same question for some guy who was getting very discouraged....I left before they could find out from Sac what is the correct answer. When you find out please let us know.
Good luck!!!

IMHO, what speck said.
And for a reality check you need to look at the numbers of people putting in for those 5 tags. The odds in this state are stacked severely against elk hunters even with max points. But, like they say, if you don't put in you won't ever draw...

That is the way I read it too Phil, Just making sure. I have no problem with the max point preference drawing but it would be nice if they did the random pool as a bonus point drawing. That way the 0 point guys would still have a chance but the 1-6 point guys would also have a better chance.

That's why whenever you get drawn for an Elk tag and start over in points, you start putting in for one of the hunts with a single bull tag, where it is random only... you have just as good a chance to draw a tag as anyone else in that drawing even those with more points.
Make sence?

Tuffy, in '05 I did something I had never done before, I missed the deadline. I was so angry with myself because now I had less than max points. The next year I applied as you stated above and I drew.

I understand, it just stinks for the guys who have 4 or 5 worthless points.

That's about the size of it SD! If you don't have max points you are in same pool as none really,my 3 won't help much. You are in random pool. And non-residents.... that's good advice Tuffy! Me,I'm trying for a cow tag.

This is exactly the problem with the drawing as it stands (at least for any of the tags that are high demand - you either have max points, and a have a reasonable chance or you have something less than max points - doesn't matter if you are one point away from max points or ZERO points - it's all or nothing. You either have max points, or you might as well have zero, because anything less than Max points is treated the same as if you had zero ;-(

Points are unfair and all points systems suck. Theyare like a Ponzi Pyramid scheme.... I wrote letters, posted posts, and tried to say how unfair points are....

For the record, I do have max points for deer, sheep, and elk. Was in theaiting period for lope when it started.

Eventually the points systems will all change. Just hope I get my investment back before they do. I have tons of points in most western states. Hate to think of how much I have spent on them...

Ya, me too. That really sucks that they didn't do away with the waiting period when they started the point system.

I like point systems, I just think ours could be more fair. Not that i personally care as I'm maxed out for the three other than deer, but I have buddies who are hosed.

It is correct that if you do not have max points then the number of points does not matter (0 to 1 less than max are treated the same in the random draw). Some of the antlerless hunts seem to be turning over or will in the next couple years. At that point less than max point holders (1 less) will be max point holders for those hunts. Hope that makes sense.
Is it the best system? no and yes. Opinions are all over the place. Some people hate any type of point system, others like our system, and still other like different systems. No one system is going to make everyone happy. For those of you who are unhappy with our current system I encourage you to let the Fish and Game Commission know how you feel. If truly a large percentage of people feel the same way then it needs to be expressed to the Commission. But with roughly 330 tags and 26,000 applicants no system is going to cycle through people at any rate of speed. We will hopefully add a few more hunts next year but with most of our hunts tag quotas will be low. It will spread out applicants a bit more making draw odds "better" for other hunts. Good luck to everyone in the draw.

Exactly. There should be no points on stuff that does not cycle over in somewhat short cycle compared to a hunter's life. I can see once in a lifetime for sheep, bull elk, buck antelope in CA.... But a draw is not assured in anyones life...or even likely. Favoring past history just is plain not fair. Especially so, if it's Pyramid scam!

For stuff that cycles in say 10 years or less, O.K.......

Think a points system would go over well for lottery tickets? I really don't see the difference:)
