It seems a contradiction: A California hatchery charged with ensuring salmon procreate despite the dams blocking their native runs is killing fish by the thousands without allowing them to breed.
Randy Pench rpench@sacbee.comThe Feather River Hatchery in Oroville killed thousands of salmon this month in an effort to restore genetic diversity to salmon runs. The practice of culling these fish is new to Feather River but has been a regular practice elsewhere. The culled salmon will be donated to a food bank.
A female chinook salmon loses some eggs, above, while being processed through the Feather River Hatchery this week.
Workers separate out the spring-run salmon, while the fall-run fish will be culled.
