Were you at CR this past weekend? So was I. I was thinking the same thing about a guided hunt. Figuered I could use some more experience before trying to nab a pig myself.

Just one pig from area 3 huh? That sucks, I was in that area the whole weekend. Saw a lot of fresh signs but no pigs. That pig was supposed to be mine.

I did see a lot of deer and elk though. Saw a 2 point buck and and single doe in area 3. Saw a group of 6 female elk in area 4 by the impact area.

I'd say I had a lot more fun going up and down the muddy hill trails than really hunting. I should wash my jeep tomorrow.

I know what you mean reddog5.....with high gas price, food, and entry fee's I figured out this year that for the price of 2 and a half trips to FHL I could join a hunting club......no people hassles,no waiting in line,no worrying if they will be open, more game and I can use my quad.....I wish I did this years ago.

If you guys were to join a hunting club, which club would you join? I drive from LA and have been to CR three times this year and it does get expensive.

The club I joined is a private club.....and there are quite a few of these......I even think I seen a post here that said there was an opening in a club in parkfield....I may be wrong, it's been awhile ago.....and the DFG should have a list of all the clubs...I don't know where it would be but I know that clubs have to pay a fee and was told that theres a list....you might check there and get info on how to contact a club to see if there are any openings.....good luck and happy hunting.

I checked and found this list of clubs.....go here and maybe it will give you some info

I also was at Camp Roberts this past weekend. Saw lots of signs but they were about a week or two old. Came across a fresh track in Area 3 by the river. Tracked it down all day and it went in some thick brush. Casted a couple or rocks in the thick brush and saw the pig came out of the thick brush on the next ridge over. It stopped about 80 yards right before it disappear over the ridge. Either I take a shot or never see it again. So I went ahead and pulled the trigger. Turned out I hit a brush limb and missed the pig. Never saw it again. I think that pig might have gone 250 pounds. I also found the pigs' Motel 6 where they snored and sang "Good Night Sleep Tight". But they have not used that bedding area for a while. All the beds were old. I hope they come back. I had an ambush planned next time I go back there. I kinda have a good feeling if any pig are in the area I might get to post a picture here.

I also saw 6 cow elk on a steep hillside in area 3.

Hey Reddog5,
Me and my buddies were at CR this weekend too. Spent most of the weekend in Area 4 but some in 3. Saw lots of wild life (Deer, Elk, Fox, Coyote, Squirrel, Eagle, Hawk, Quail, Dove, Waterfowl) BUT no Pigs!! Are Pigs that much harder to track and hunt then most game or what? What is your opition?

i see so much sign its kind of hard to tell whats new and whats not. last weekend it rained so it hydrated all the pig poo. i was on a ridge in area 1 and was walking through what had too be a heard of pig poo! there were droppings in the area of a football field covered every square inch! ive only been to C.R. twice but seen more pig sign every time i go . Just no pigs. You should ask Live 2 Hunt. He at least got a shot off.
<

Also all those animals you saw probably dont get shot at every weekend like the pigs do!

Reddog,
I was shooting a Remington 7400 Carbine in 30-06. It has an 18.5" barrel compact for brush busting guys like me. It's semi-auto for fast follow up shots if needed. I've kill many pigs with it and it's my primary rifle for pig hunting. To elaborate my newly discovered honeyhole, all I will say is Area 3. I will elaborate more about my ambush plan when I get pic to post in this forum.

Condor,
In my opinion, pigs are not as hard to hunt as deer. It's just because pigs are only transient to public lands due to the heavy hunting pressure. Noticed that you were on Area 4 most of the time. Pigs like the thick stuff and Area 4 does not have much of that. You may catch them in the open but only the first couple of hours in the morning or last hours in the evening. Next time look for them near thick brushes or dense timber. My most successful pig hunting method is to get up on a high point and glass for the first couple morning hours, find fresh tracks, and track it down in the afternoon. Usually the tracks will lead you to thick brush where they bed down for the day. I then either come up with an ambush plan and flush them out of the brush or leave the area alone for a evening still hunt.

Too bad for me but I'm done for the rest of the year. Kinda busy. Going snowboarding this weekend and then I'm hosting a christmas party the weekend after.

Mazda 4x4? I think you were there with a friend. Where you first in the car line to get in on sunday? If so, I was right behind you. Straighten out that license plate will ya! Anyways, I was in a dark grey jeep grand cherokee.

I think I have blisters on the bottom of my feet. Kinda hurts. That's what I get for wearing brand new hiking boots on a 2 day hunting trip. I still need to wash my jeep. It's still muddy even after all that rain. I took some pictures of my jeep. I might have to post in the the rides section.

BTW: Is it just me or did the birds scare you alot while hunting? Those things kept waiting till I walked past them and then took off with a loud flapping noise. If I had been scared one more time, I probably woulda had a hearattack.

I was wearing some POS boots that I bought from sport chalet because I lost my old boots when my family moved houses. I think I'm gonna return them after cleaning the boots.

I don't think that was me you talked to. I think I was the only asian guy there. The only hunter I talked to was a guy walking down a dirt trail while I was sliding down a hill side (I kinda scraped my hands).
