I cant figure out how to PM, but I've hunted the area for a few years now. I'm by no means an expert on the area, but I'm happy to share what I know. If you know how to PM, PM me. This bullshit of keeping secrets is why we are losing hunters every year.

i know this thread was old but was planning on making a trip out here next month for a day hunt, hopefully targeting a hog. i dont need anyones honey holes, but if someone can PM me with a good area to start looking, or where i can drive to would be helpful. thanks in advance...

from what i see, theres alot of wildlife out there. Do alot of people hunt this area. I would be happy if me and my boy saw anything, deers, elk, whatever. Something so keep the interest going for him.
Did you find a good place to go? Just got my first hunting license and was thinking about the same area. I live out in Templeton Ca it's about an hour and a half drive. I'm starting off with small game with my son. The websites can be a bit confusing and from what I read on here and other sites You don't dare ask someone for their spot. And even just asking for a general location seems to upset others. But hey we gotta start somewhere especially if you don't have any hunting friends!

You have about 2 weeks left in quail season.
Download the CA DFW(G) Guide go Hunting Quail in CA from their website. Go check out Los Padres NF.

Thank you I will check into it. As far as Jackrabbits go where can that be done year round without an access permit. Carrizo plains looks like a spot but is that on Wednesdays and Saturdays only with an access permit? It's so confusing Sorry for the noob questions I just don't want to ruin it for anyone else

I've never hunted before, my pig tag says it starts July 1st. Can I start hunting pigs on the 1st or are there certain months that you can hunt pigs on the carrizo plains? There is so much information on the blm and wildlife pages, it's hard to decipher it all.

You can hunt pigs all year. They are not common on Carrizo Plains Monument, though I hear they are there. I have had the best luck for rabbits on the west side, over the hills and down towards the ag lands between Carrizo and Hwy166.

Theer are rules for Carrizo. It's not open to hunting every day in most areas. Their site is posted in thread.

I believe the monument area is open, but there are restrictions for the North and South Chimineas and American Ranch areas. I have hunted lots of times on the main Monument at all times of the year for whatever is in season or jack rabbits and coyotes any time.

I would suggest that those who have never hunted to check the link posted earlier in thread.

whats up buddy? Hope all is well with you and your family. I have not been on here in a while. Just bizzy with kids and family here in kern.

I have always thought to go check this spot and might have even posted about it years ago. But I never made it on the Sat or Wed hunts. I now wonder if there is other spots to go out there that are still close to home? Im still trying to meet local guys that like to share the country life style with the next gen. My boy is 11 now and we try to get outside when we can.
Texas hogs are always on our list. My plan is to eventually take a trip back with a deep freezer in my truck. We can get as many hogs as we want and bring them home. Waiting for it to cool off a bit and to find a hunting partner. (a few of yall are always invited.) Until than its just playing around here or the beach.

I'm good, thanks, hope same for you. I get out as often as I can, but my work still keeps me from having the fun I want.

Any dedicated Carrizo plain hunters out there. I’m a local this last year 2019 I was lucky enough to bag 2 hogs, 1 buck, 1 coyote , and 1 badger curtesy of the spot I call “the honey hole”. Just this year in 2020 I’ve already seen over 10 deer and 50+ hogs ( prob the same group ) but I see them about 80% of the time I go out. Just a matter of how far away they are. Happy hunting id love to hear from some Carrizo hunters
I am way down in San Diego but I trip up there one a year. Looking to find some hogs as my last trip was a scouting mission. Calling in coyotes is always fun but I want to get a piggy next.

this map is not really helpful as the roads, hwys, and geo features are left out so as to not really be able to tell where each boundary exists. I 'll keep digging.

The DFG site is very un clear about the regs. Am I correct that the American ranch unit you can hunt all year and any day or is this unit restricted to Wednesdays and Saturdays? Also North Chimineas say no coyote hunting but does this apply to the American Ranch unit as well? Tks.

Can you hunt antelope at carrizo? are there tags for that zone? Thanks.
They did have tags a few years back, however due to reduction in herd they no longer offer that draw. I corresponded with DFW on this and they told me there won't be a hunt in foreseeable future. I explained that the coyotes are taking out the fawns, but they wouldn't hear it. Seems they are marching to Project Coyotes drum.

I emailed Bakersfield BLM office, asking about regs. Still so confusing. Here is their response.

There is private property and state lands within the monument boundary, so you need to ensure you know where you are when hunting. The American Unit, the North & South Chimineas Units and Panorama Unit, are state lands and fall under CDFW not BLM, so you would need to check with CDFW on any special hunting requirements they have for lands that they manage.

Keep the following in mind when on Carrizo Plain National Monument:

While hunting is allowed, target shooting is not allowed.

All vehicles on the monument must be street-legal (no ATVs, UTVs, etc).

All vehicles must remain on roads. Off-road vehicle travel is not allowed.

There are no services (gas, food, water) available on the monument and cell phone service is spotty at best.

There is no trash service on the monument; remember if you pack it in, please pack it out.

Fire Restrictions are in effect.
