CITGO Bassmaster report

Curtis Nichols of Escondido, fishing in his first-ever BASS Tour event, was in 13th place yesterday in the amateur division after Day 2 of the CITGO Bassmaster California Open at Clear Lake.

Nichols, 37, a San Diego County deputy sheriff, has a two-day total of 10 bass for 18 pounds, 9 ounces, earning a spot in the Top 50 and surviving the cut to fish today's third and final round. "I fish with the Ramona Bass Anglers, and I wanted to see what the big leagues of fishing was all about," Nichols said.

Bill Siemantel, a big-bass specialist from Castaic and the first-round leader here, held on to the lead with a two-day sack total of 38 pounds, 3 ounces.

Former San Diegan Dean Rojas, now living in Grand Saline, Texas, is in 30th place with 21 pounds, 14 ounces. And Gabe Bolivar of Ramona is in 33rd with 21 pounds, 10 ounces.

Former San Diegan Dennis Kolender, now of Henderson, Nev., missed the cut.
