Perfect oven size........hogs are a nuisance........that is why in many County Parks and in many State Parks(Henry Coe State Park as an example), the policy is eradication.......they hire professional trappers to trap and kill from piglets to adult pigs. That is why there is no size limit in the California Dept. of Fish and Game regulations on pig hunting. 'Nuff said.
Eve, I pray that Cal Poly is charging you or your family out of state tuition-we need it! I also hope that you forked out $55.90 (out of state pig tag) for that 4 lb piglet you killed. What you fail to realize is that Camp Roberts is in central california and is not a golf course community, nor does it have any county or state parks being damaged nearby. What you were taught in hawaii about killing pigs should stay there. Go home and kill the so called "damaging" pigs and leave our 4 pounders here to live at least a month. I wonder if that "trophy" was even 1 1/2 weeks old? My guess is that you chucked it into the dormatory garbage on your way home
well guys we just got back there were 20 pigs and 5 turkeys taken at noon when we left a 200 from area 1 and a 250 from area 3 and a 200 from area 4 this morning and a 150 from area 5 only the one from area 4 was field dressed the rest where all between 85 and less and yes there was a 4 lber taken the kid was excited it was his frist pig and everyone one laughung at him but it was more then what they all had and he did spen his money for the pass and the tag so if he want to tag a 4 lb pig and pay a min fee of 32.00 the more power to him i personally wouldnt do it but he was happy too we got skunked we had a good time and got to spot for 2 guys that shot at 3 pigs but didnt connect and we seen a nice one this morning but couldnt get a shot at it so i guess we will try agian memorial weekend vern
Im not trying to start an argument or anything BuckFinder. But I took these two kids out on their first "big" game hunt. We missed 2 shots, ended up taking a baby. They got the full tutorial on how to field dress and skin a "medium game" animal, and the hog will be eaten.
If you want to talk about hunters, why don't you talk to the kid hunting turkeys with a 7mm rifle that told me he took a 200yard shot at 3 of them lined up (Same group that took the 250lb 3" cutters on saturday), or the two 40-50lb pigs we found shot and dumped in unit 5. At least we went, hiked our as%es off, had a great time and came home with a dinner. We got some laughs at the check in station, no one seemed mad.
I hate how judgemental people are on this board. Am I not allowed to tell you guys how the hunt went for fear of being verbally abused on a stupid message board? Have you ever seen me make a negative post on this board? Why don't you show at least a little respect
Eve, If I read your last post correctly you are now accusing two separate parties of violating california state hunting laws. Am I reading this correctly? Hunt Hard and his so called cousins just happened to wipe out an entire family of 25 pound pigs in the same area you are describing and at the same time they ran out of tags(his post) and now you are accusing the party who killed a decent sized pig of shooting turkeys with a rifle. I hope as a decent citizen you turned both parties in. Did you? I have the local game wardens number if you need it. Did you get a license plate, name, anything? Personally, it sounds like you are trying to justify your ridiculous killing. You say you took two kids, yet how old are you? My guess is that you might be twenty if that. Your childess acts belong back in Hawaii where you can get away with it! If you need that Wardens number I have it when your ready....If you don't want people being judgemental, then try shooting an animal than actually runs away when shot at. A four pounder will never leave his momma!
I never saw the kid actually shooting at the turkeys so I didn't think of reporting him. He could have just been lying. And yes, he was in the group driving the 'Jurassic Park' Landcruiser. I was talking to him and he told me about his 200yard shot at the 3 lined up turkeys, he also said he was hunting turkeys and hogs. His gun was slung behind his back, I assumed he was using a shotgun, but when I asked him if he had slugs for hogs he looked at me like I was speaking gibberish. When he turned around I asked him what kind of gun he had and I saw he had a scoped 7mm.
And I never once said that it was hunthards cousins who shot and dumped the two hogs. The majority of the hunters were in area 5 so it could have been anyone. Oh, and the piglet was running from us...and his momma was long gone.
I am 21, the two 'kids' I brought were both 20. I am sorry if I offended you by typing 'kids'. And I am not justifying anything because I don't think what we did was wrong. It was 100% legal and we followed every rule and regulation.
If you really want me to call the warden and report it I will. Although I don't think they will do anything about it since I was not a witness to either wrongdoing. And they have no proof of either. The only thing I know is that the kid shooting at turkeys was in the group of Mexicans driving the landcruiser.
And please dont call me names or call me childish. I never called you any names, or anyone else on this board. You're taking this post way out of line and insulting me in the process.
I contacted DFG aabout where to get tags and they sent me a list of stores that still had them and how many. So I found them at K-Mart in Simi Valley. Opening day was insane at the check-in. Never taken so long to get in. 8:30 before we got to a hunting spot. Most of the pigs taken were 50 -80# and in area 5. A couple of nice big ones taken. But there were at least 150 hunters the first morning. So I don't think the hunter to pig taken ratio was too good if you factor out the family of small ones that was wiped out in area 5. Area 4 is still mostly off limits cause of that purple flower and they shut the gate to the avery road along the river in the shotgun zone. Morning was tuff in the area 2-3 up high cause of the fog. We got on some fresh rooting and fresh crap in area 3 but lost the tracks in some thick stuff. We didn't see much fresh sign both days got skunked but had a great time being out there with my son,who hasn't killed anything in 5 years now.
Welcome to Wide World of Public Land Hunting, where you are sure to run into more "hunters" than legal game, where the picknick tables burn all night long, everyone snores LOUDLY, the whiskey flows like a river, men are men and women are too...
EvBouret, I would have shot the piglet too. Most of us never see any pigs on public land, so when you do, even if it is a piglet, you shoot it. Good job and congrats. on the good eats.
The wildlife biologists who establish game seasons and limits have determined that wild pigs don't require age, size, number, or season limits. That should be good enough for anyone. Taking a 10 lb pig is perfectly legal, perfectly ethical, and perfectly tasty! Wish it had been me.
Given a chance of shooting between a big tusker and a piglet, I'll take the latter. I'll probably waste the meat on a big boar. I'll never intentionally shoot a wet sow.
We'll if I see something illegal, I'll go out of my way to report it.
That's my ethical standards. And no one has the right to tell me otherwise -- except my parent who raised, fed and housed me to maturity.
