DEADLINE FOR LANDOWNER PREFERENCE REGISTRATION NEARS

The deadline for landowners to register in a program to draw priority license-vouchers for deer, elk and antelope hunting is Jan. 10, 2003.

The deadline to register in the Priority Landowner Licensing Program is Jan. 10, 2003. The program allows landowners to apply for priority license-vouchers for deer, elk or antelope in units where they own property. Registration forms are available at all Division of Wildlife (DOW) Service Centers and can be requested through the Internet at AskDOW@state.co.us or by calling (303) 297-1192.

In order to qualify for the program, landowners must own at least 160 contiguous acres of agricultural property that is inhabited by elk, deer or antelope for the majority of the year. The property must be located in a game management unit where elk, deer or antelope licenses are totally limited, and the landowner must agree to allow a reasonable amount of hunting to occur on the property. In exchange, the landowner will receive a priority status in the limited license drawing, where 15 percent of the available limited licenses are set aside for private property owners.

Depending on the acreage owned, landowners can apply for up to six priority vouchers per species. The breakdown on applications is as follows: if a landowner owns between 160 to 639 acres they can apply for one voucher; between 640 to 1,199 acres, two vouchers; between 1,200 to 2,399 acres, three vouchers; between 2,400 to 3,999, four vouchers; between 4,000 to 4,999 acres, 5 vouchers; if they own 5,000 or more acres they can apply for six vouchers.

Successful landowner applicants will receive a license voucher(s) that can be transferred to any person who is eligible to hold a big game license. Season participation, and annual bag limits still apply. The voucher can be presented at any DOW office and allow the holder to purchase a valid hunting license for the species and unit listed on the voucher.

Only “owners of record” can apply to register deeded property in the priority program. Once accepted, property registrations are valid for five years. Landowner applicants who are unsuccessful in drawing vouchers will be given preference in the following year. The existing “regular” landowner preference system is still available to property owners that choose not to register their property, however landowners who register their property in the priority program are given first preference in the limited drawing.
